Post by Tsporter »

Has anyone got one of these? Could you tell me the size needed for a mk1 oil filter?
Need to order one ASAP...

Oil filters should be hand tight, you shouldn't need anything, unless it's the first time you've changed it and the previous owner did it too tight!

If it's any help, the oil filter on a MK1 is just about the same as every other Toyota.

Yeah it's practically welded on! I've tried a chain tool already with no success...

Well, maybe best to go to halfords, find an oil filter for a Yaris and see if the wrench they sell fits. It's a pretty standard looking oil filter sizewise.

My old man has always used one of these:

Never failed yet! And useful for undoing all sorts of other tight things (he uses them to remove the lids from home-brew beer barrels!)

TBF the filters say hand tight plus 3/4 turn.

Worst case stick a screwdriver through it but I've never had a filter I couldn't get off with the appropriate toolage.

i use self adjusting jaw type wrench for tight filters. but mostly, a sandpaper wrapped around the filter (to increase friction) and hand do the job.

I've used a screwdriver before, makes a mess, but does the job.

Years of experience I suppose..? This is the tightest most awkward fecker of a filter I've seen.

To quote on of the lads on mr2.ie:-

At first I was convinced Toyota must have used the MR2 production line as a punishment for their employees.

"You rate again!"

"I srept in, bus earry, not my faurt"

"You go MR2 line!"

"NO NO I be good"
