MR2 race crash

Yesterday's Chumpcar world series - Mike Helm driving Bill Strong's MR2 Mk2 suffered a left front balljoint failure when leading.....

Car & driver returned to the fray after being towed back to the pits for repairs, and eventually finished 6th in the 14hr race :thumleft:

How much damage did hitting the tyre wall cause?
That's a good result especially after a crash mid race :thumleft:

How exactly does a ball joint fail?

Was it an aftermarket one?
