I knew it wouldn't be long before I missed my MR2 so I'm back with my 4th one so far. Searched for a quite a while to find a nice car and didn't realise how hard it was these days to find a nice solid Mk2
Anyway I picked this up because the owner had had it 7 years, had full service history, Tax & MOT, and it looked like a solid car... Oh how I was wrong.
Got it home to find the owner must have just undersealed over the rust for 7 years as when I got it up in the air and gave it a good whack both rear arches and the drivers floor just broke through. Stripped it out and found nastyness
Oh dear, both rear arches where it joins the boot were totally shot.
Got every welded up and sealed for £220. However the brake balance was still way off so thought whilst I refurb the calipers I would throw in some grooved discs and yellowstuff pads (use them in the Elise and love 'em)
Got through its MOT fine then Next was to clean up the paint work, some places had faded terribly but overall the paint was clean and good to work with, very few stone chips aswell. I got to work doing a quick cut over with the DA machine polisher just to get rid of the major fadedness and it come up OK.
My shocks were also getting pretty tired so I took a risk on some £100 Apexi adjustable shocks and springs off ebay. Look similar to the ones below V
Whilst the weather was good this weekend I decided to take the T-bars off and wrap them red (I do a lot of my own sign writing so only took about 30 mins), and also fit the new parts I had ordered over last month (Shocks, lights, number plate, shifter kit, K&N induction kit, stereo etc)
And this is how it stands today
Happy with it at the moment but still have a few more things to do before it goes to Le Mans next months!
- Fit new sump (this is rotten)
- Deeper cut with the machine polisher
- Refurb wheels Anthracite
- Fit my Yokohama A022's (Cheeky ebay win)
And hopefully polybush everything when I get back.
Alex
(Oh, and here's a cheeky pic of the Elise for those interested!)

Picked up some more spare wheels so contemplating a cheeky colour change before maybe going to 16's. Did a few photoshops and can't decide what I like!
Black
Slightly more anthracite
Wildcard Brown

Nice job on the paintwork
The wheels look nice in anthracite or black.
Do the T-bar panels still let light through? Interesting mod

Not serious light but if you don't have the T-bar shades in it does feel a bit like a rave, I will take a pic from the inside

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Nice clean car. Love the Elise! I came close to buying one a while back, after driving one a couple of years ago.
Nice touch with the T bar glass, very unique
Wheels wise a high gloss black would work well with the clean red.

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Its seems black is always a safe bet with wheels I may have to start a little thread for the Elise as it is heavily modified and everybody seems to love it aha
Fitted a chinese gearknob today for £8, not too keen on it but will have to do until I get a nice clean OEM knob!

Anthracite or gloss black.
Don't actually mind that gearknob

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
I've pulled the gear gaiter down slightly exposing the metal shifter and the shift knob actually looks and feels great now. Might polish up the shifter a bit
Here's the gearknob if anyone was interested, fitment is xxxx but does go on eventually.

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Here's the inside of the car with the vinyled roof, it is fairly red! Considering sticker bombing it or doing some rising sun graphics on top of some blank vinyl so they could be easily removed. The T-bar shades will cover them if wanted though.

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
That works well, as you can essentially have three feels in the car...
1. Shades etc in - Hard top
2. Glass and shades out - Open top
3. Glass in and shades out - Porn movie set

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Looks great! Can you apply a black or something first so the inside lets less light through?
Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Yup, I'm actually gonna vinyl black the inside first either way and then probably sticker bomb it
They are fairly easy to wrap. If you have worked with vinyl before you can do them in about 30 mins

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
I fancied doing mine in solid colour but I don't know where to find cosmos blue vinyl... I like the tbar roof removability but want the tin top looks!
Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
That was how I felt about T-bars, fairly easy to get a colour match these days though.
You can either ask a signwriting company to wrap it and let them find a match or go on a site such as MDP supplies ( http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk ) and ask for free colour samples etc. You can actually get some really good metallic vinyl these days. Also mine wasn't that good of a match but only cost me £10 for the roll and once its on you would never know!

Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Car looks great, i would go for Antracite rather than Gloss Black as your tyres will always look dirty with Gloss Black IMO. What about the lighter Anniversary Anthracite?
Re: HughesR1's Red N/A restoration
Went with satin black for now as these wheels only cost me £20 and I just plan to use them until tyres are dead .
Had an afternoon giving the engine bay a quick clean and replaced a few manky bolts, getting there slowly. Also tinted the rear 1/4 windows with some left over tint (mostly to try and have a bit less sun going in for Le mans!)
Overall quite happy with how the car is coming along as it did look pretty rough a few months back!
Also managed to get the a new engine rebuilt and fitted in the Elise this weekend after I blew it up at Mallory Park. Here it is next to a fat bloke
