I want to upgrade my CT26b turbo on my rev 1.
I'm torn between a ct20b I've found for 200 quid or upgrading to a T3 ot T3/T4 set up.
Cost breakdown :
CT20b:
CT20b = 200... done
T3/T4/etc:
Turbo: 200
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T3-T4-63-A-R- ... 20c9dbfd94
Manifold Adaptor: 45
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MR2-T3-T4-TUR ... 2eb09f1259
Downpipe: 90
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-MR2-SW ... 2c57c2ea7a
38mm Waste gate: 50
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/38mm-EXTERNAL ... 41713ade21
So 335 + some oil pipes.
Is there anything I'm forgetting. Will this even work with the stock ECU?
The ct20b is rated to 400 hp ish, so is fine, especially considering my poor fuel system. It's just that for not much more money I have the first parts of the upgrades and I can then look towards the standalone ECU and forged internals to really up the boost on the turbo set up i already have.
The power characteristics of a T3/T4 seem so similar to a ct20b is there any point anyway? Is it only worth buying the manifolds and lines if upgrading to a much larger turbo?
I'm just thinking out loud but would be good to get another opinion before I commit either way.

You'd trust that turbo in your engine bay?

I just picked one.
There are 30 T3/T4's on eBay from 20 different sellers all around 200 quid.
Why don't you go pick a good one and be useful.

they will all be as xxxx as each other
Re: CT20b vs T3 - Talk to me
The point is valid, there are plenty of decent 2nd hand T3's on ebay.
On a related note why do most T3's have external wassstegates? If a budget T3 buildup is possible would an internally gated turob be better for similar BHP to the CT20b?
I've sort of started down the T28 route as most of these are internally gated but I'm not so far donw that I could not change to a T3.

Yes, there are.
What you have witnessed are the usual IMOC half-wits jumping on the 'I have loads of money' band wagon. They generally have nothing useful to say just condescending remarks and put downs.

Not at all, I think you'll find that the advice is consistent, and just advising you against fitting a turbo that is cheap and will end up failing.
Come on, £200 for a brand new turbo....
Brand new GT3071 kit, £2500, brand new CT20b, £700. Stage 3 hybrid CT26, £950.
We're trying to help you. Don't just turn on us all because we disagree with you wanting to buy a cheap crappy turbo.
At end of the day, it's your hard earned, so after the advice (which you asked for)
To then call us all halfwits for giving that wanted advice
Fair enough, crack on.

Re: CT20b vs T3 - Talk to me
what is your setup?
if it is a stock rev1, then a ct20b is going to be the right upgrade especially on stock ecu, could do rev3 ecu swap with sensors to make the most if you are on a budget.
t3/t4 or other aftermarket turbo is going to need ecu mapping. run the ct20b for a bit while you gather parts for a proper turbo with manifold and ecu and forged engine.

this.
Whats the point in blowing £200 on a crap ebay turbo when you can have a proven ct20 and reduce the risk of having your engine lunched

T3 would be a complete waste of time on a stock car, stick a ct20 on it

Couldn't agree more!
I had one customer who managed to make an ebay indo-chinese-philipino-mexicana Garrett turbo last 4 months. When it went he was pleased...
that it didn't damage his engine.

I very much doubt that neither Craig, me, or anyone else on this thread could achieve that.
It would be a bit like going to my local park and asking which is the nicest pile of poo on the playing field.

IMOC half-wit reporting in. Hate to break it to you mate, but if you don't post stupid questions, you won't get stupid answers. All it takes is a two second search for eBay turbo to see that it never ends well - not to mention the fact that common sense dictates that there's a reason this 'precision component' is so cheap.
So about being a half-wit...

rather amusing comment lol but couldnt agree more i had a shitty ebay turbo n chucked it coz it didnt last a yr, fair enought my garrett gt35r was a f**king fortune but for the proven reliability it was worth every penny
