Anybody used Toyo Proxes T1-R 195/50/R15 on the front?

Post by moscoworbust »

Hi,

I have stock rims, freshly painted.

The front tyres are breaking down. SO need replacing.

195/55/R15 as standard.

all the 195/55/R15's are like 80 quid, the 195/50/R15 are only 55 quid. Blackcircle.com.

I used Toyo Proxes T1-R on my old 1972 VW beetle and they gripped so so well.

Anyone used these or recommend any others?

Try and stick to stock size tyres. They will be available. The problem is getting 225/50/15 rears, not 195/55/15 fronts.

Using 195/50s will be fine, but the wheel well will be less full obviously due to the reduced outer diameter of the tyre. This won't affect your speedometer or acceleration as these are dealt with by the rear wheels as I'm sure you know.

There are a good number of strong tyre choices. Toyo T1R are considered midrange, I suppose, though I liked them when I had them. Consider Bridgestone or Yokohama for even better performance.

My car is decked.

The front lip is only 3-4 cm off the ground.

With 195/55/R15's they sit inside the well.

I was thinking 195/50's to give me a little more clearance.

Thanks for the reply.

The only ones I'm tempted by are the DUNLOP Sport BluResponse. 59 fitted.

I love the proxe tread pattern though.

I had the same dilemma when replacing my tires, again on stock size rims. I opted for 195/50/15 yoko parada spec 2's and these feel fantasic! Was a bit gutted i couldnt get them in the right size for the rear and ended up on standard size proxes t1r's wich feel up to the mark.

Yes I have, you'll get more understeer with a 195/225 setup than with a 205/225 setup. 205/225 feels more neutral

Did you go 205/50?

What height?

I have stock 225's on the rear. Not sure of brand or height. Came with the car.

It's just too low to fit 205/55.

195/55 is about the limit.

I had 205/50/15's on my old NA with a 30mm drop. No problem at all.

Slightly lower sidewall height by about 5mm I think.

ok cheers.. seems for 195/50's they are 55 quid each, for 205/50 they are 79 quid each. A huge price difference.

This is online with Blackcircles, when i called up tyre garages the prices are almost double.

They must rip people off everyday, knowing they can get a better deal online.

I went from 195/50/15 + 225/50/15 to 205/50/16 + 225/45/16

The 16" setup was far superior.

No way am I sanding back and painting another set of wheels, nor can I afford 4 wheels and tyres.

I think I'll get these for 120 fitted. Bit crazy tbh as I've seen sets of wheels and tyres going for 150.

But, I guess the added grip will pay dividends and maybe save my or someone else's life.

The rear tyres are basically new.

either that or every time you turn in quickly over 20 miles an hour it'll p-ss you off cos it just slides forward instead of going round the corner. :thumleft:

Besides, 195/50 up front doesn't give extra grip, it reduces front end grip, hence the understeer.

Lets face it, you're not buying a 195/50 for the handling characteristics, you're buying them cos they're cheap.

I had them on my old VW as I said.. they were really good. And a VW has less weight over the front than a MR2.

I'm forking out for the 205/50's as a compromise. I don't think thats being very cheap, even though I'm trying to keep the spending on the car down. It's basically an extra 20 quid for 20mm more contact and to keep a similar side wall as a 195/55.

Less weight over the front + skinnier tyres(195s) means understeer central. You can't compare a front engine hatchback to a mid engined sports car.

Anyway, good stuff going for the 205/50, the car will have a more neutral balance. :thumleft:

Agreed, I'd definitely go for the 205/50 which is the price I quoted above.

I've also got 205/50/16 on the front of mine although not much of a gap with the 16's.

I'm not sure why going from 195/55/15 to 205/50/16 was more superior due to the 1" wheel increase, it was probably due to the 195>205 upgrade and as you bought better tyres.

Yes, that's what I was getting at. Moving to a 16 gave me more choice in a sports tyre other than a T1R, a T1R, or a T1R.

It was a 1972 classic beetle, they have the engine in the rear, running a 1.8 litre twin carb 150 hp engine.. used to shift. Massive high walled 225's on the rear too, california look, slammed front, high back, turbo muffler. It was awesome.
