[Mk2] [Turbo] Lot of oil Intake Crank Case breather to blame.

Post by sparki »

Has anyone ever had so much oil coming from the rev3 catch can into there intake that it has covered everything from the Intake piping all the way to the Intercooler intake ?

Anyone got any ideas what could be doing this ?

Can the OEM catch can fill up ?

The only time I've heard of something similar happening is when you get excessive crankcase pressure which forces the oil out of the breathers. It's usually caused by shattered/broken ringlands on the pistons, allowing blowby to pressurise the crankcase. Basically, it's not good news I fear.

Agreed. Compression test would be a good start.

Just had a thought, but when you say "covered" do you mean a thin film of oil or actual oil? A thin film might just be a build up of years worth of crankcase fumes. If it's actual oil then you might well be in trouble.

A little bit of history here:

The car has just come back after being diagnosed with a faulty knock sensor that wasn't throwing any error codes. This was retarding the timing up to (20-25 degrees iirc). This has all been fixed now.

After only having it for 1 week I started to notice oil was seeping out of the intercooler piping including out of the first connection from the turbo.

This weekend i took off all the piping and found this amount of oil in the hot pipe to intercooler piping.

This intake piping was covered around the crank case pipe. However the turbo didn't seem to bad.

Anyway its all been cleaned up now so i can open it back up later on and see if the oil is still appearing.

It is the ECU that retards the timing, not the knock sensor, so if there was knock it was working the way it should.
Also how would anyone know it was retarding the timing by 20-25 degrees?

If you do have all that oil going into the engine then it is going to knock

The knock sensor was faulting and causing the ECU to retard unnecessarily.

Once this was replaced everything was working better again.

OEM catch can is actually just an oil separator and permanently drains oil to the head.

It's a very difficult call to make regarding how much crankcase oil vapour is too much, see what it's like in 200 miles or so and report back. Is there much pooled in the bottom of the intercooler?

I recently took all my inlet piping apart and noticed small amounts of oil in the bottom of the piping around the connections all the way from the turbo to the throttle body. It was nowhere near as bad as the pictures above and isn't leaking out anywhere but did still concern me, wasn't sure if it was normal or not.

I think the car does get through a bit of oil - not sure if it's burning it or it's just the oil leak that I'm struggling to fix, or possibly both.

will do compression test when i get a chance but engine runs sweetly so wouldn't have thought it's lacking compression...
