20 Valve 4A-GE

Post by elbon50 »

Is it feasible to fit a 20 valve head onto a 16 valve cylinder block please ?

The 20V uses exactly the same bolck as all the later 4A-GE engines ( ie the ones with oil squirters etc. ). Remember though you'll need the 20V ECU and loom to get the best out of it, as it has an early version of VVTi IIRC :-k

You'll need 20V pistons too.

If i remember right you'll also need to run the 20v throttle bodies, you wouldn't be able to run the 16v inlet manifold on it either.

They aren't that expensive, it would make way more sense to just fit a whole 20v engine if you want to go that way.

It's seriously disappointing though even if you did.

The answer is, just buy a 20v engine complete if that's what you want to do.

If you want ITB's, fit ITB's to a 16v head, but you'll need an aftermarket ECU realistically and set it up etc.

Plus there are two types of 20v engine and though the heads are the same the ITB's differ slightly in choke sizes. Also the rods are different on the black top and of course the pistons are different for obvious reasons.

Either way it's going to cost a fair bit to be fair.

Neither does the 20v!

More like 8200rpm.

500rpm is a fair increase. Nowhere near 9000rpm though and it's frankly not all that when you compare it to the likes of the B18C5.

Well my mates JDM integra when we rebuilt the engine that wassn't a massively high rev'er even with the apexi AFC, well it was lower than i thought it would be. Ive seen blacktop's hit like 10k rpm iirc, thats why i thought they were more standard. Obbiosuly this would be with even more tinkering but anything is possible!

Sure anything is possible if you spend absolutely tons of money. The B18C5 redline is 8499rpm, didn't your friend thoroughly ruin his? Sure you can get a BT 20V to rev to 10K but it will cost you similar in money in order to get it to do so.

Have you been watching too much Initial D? ;)

Stenky if you have the stock ECU it won't rev past 7599rpm. Rev counters often over read.

Hmmm so a complete 20V engine is the best way forward then :-k

Presumably the AE86 forums would be the best place to look ?

Can only see one blacktop on eBay, it's in Canada & they want £1100+

(6 speed included)

Yep, and it's a crap engine anyway, you'll hardly notice any gain.

No bang for your buck, just novelty factor really.

Peter for that money you can get an SC engine, far more fun.

For £1500 you can buy a whole Corolla T sport, take the 2zz engine out, it bolts in on 3 of the mounts, do the conversion yourself with a little research, break the Corolla and sell the rest of the parts off for £2500 (been done before) , and you end up with a 190bhp Mk1 with 6 speed box, revs like the wind, VVti and £1000 in your back pocket.

No brainer.
