How To Run Old Games, Help! (PC)

Post by DAN_REV1_TURBO »

Ok, so I had to drag out Championship Manager 2 for novelty value! I really have an urge to play it but....

The version I have is the old monster box PC CD ROM/486 version. Not even Windows 95. Anyway, I whacked the CD in and installed it, all seemed fine it recognised and installed perfectly, all gone on my C drive. However when you click the game file a black box comes up then pops off, like it tries to start then cant.

I went into properties `compatibility` and changed to windows 95. No joy still wont open the game. I tried opening the `run`/`command` DOS screen and tried to get it to boot up with that, but I`m rubbish I`m not sure I was even entering the correct commands.

Lastly I was so desperate to play this game I reinstalled windows as FAT32 rather than NTFS which is what I installed it as last time, thinking the older FAT32 would allow me to boot up old games. Still no CM2!

How can I get this game to run? It must be possible as it installs perfectly it just wont kick in and load the game up. It`s bugging me! Anybody with better knowledge than myself care to help? Beer tokens can be provided! My laptop is 11 years old running windows XP service pack 3 installed. Cheers.

Either DOSBox or VDMS should do the job. I use these to run old PC games in Windows XP.

You probably want to find out why it won't run though. Assuming you installed it to C:\CM2 or similar, you need to run the command prompt and type

C:
cd \CM2
cm2.exe (or whatever the name of the exe is to run the game)

This should show you the error msg.

Hey Rick I have the DOSbox already and I have the actual game disk. Should that DOSbox not be able to run and recognise the files on my comp I loaded off the disk? Is there a difference with the download to what I already have?

OK, I do all the correct command prompts...

Get to typing C:\CM2.EXE which should then boot the game up.. I get this message>

CAN NOT FIND *LASERLOK* CD_ROM IN ANY DRIVE

Any ideas?

Download and install this

http://www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0

Download the above DOSBox I linked

Extract the DOSBox-0.74 folder, say to c:\temp\DOSBox-0.74 for example

Download Champ Manager from the above link

Extract the zip file, lets say to

C:\Temp\Champ

run c:\temp\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe

In the windows type

mount c c:\temp

c:

cd champ

install

press enter

select install

press escape when it all done

it will leave you in the champ man 2 directory where you can type

CM2

it will then run.

Just done this in a couple of mins on my works lap top.

EDIT: Sorry posted all that before seeing your reply.
One you run DosBox you have to 'mount' a drive on your computer.
Not sure if you can get it to use your actually disk, but if you down load the game above then it's made to work with DOSBox.

I'm going home in 9 mins so good luck :)
