Mk1A seats into Mk1B (opinons please)

Post by muckyman »

Hi all
got a Mk1B with black interior.
Car has been sprayed in black & silver with a red stripe (see pic below)

Whilst my seats are spotless, I'm thinking about changing them with Mk1A seats in either black & red (to go with the stripe) or black & white (to go with the silver part of the body).
Would the white inserts look odd with the car colour or would it be better with the black & red seats? Opinions please.
(also, anyone got a set of either that they want to swap for black MK1B seats - must be in great condition with all adjusters working)

IMO, only the 1a white(grey) and black sets will work. However, if you want to try it with some red/black 1a seats, I have a spare set but I'm pretty sure they'll look like absolute dogsh*t

Yeah I agree plus I found my mk1a seats more uncomfortable

I think I agree on the red not being good, but I was unsure if the black & white (grey) would not match too well with the silver & black exterior.

(I seem to remember the MK1A seats being more comfortable for some reason. Were the actual seat designs changed between A and B or was it simply a colour change?)

I reckon either will look fine, both will look better than the horrible mk1b seats.

Not aware of any functional difference between a and b seats. a seats will be older though which might cause them to be more worn out and therefore uncomfortable.

Supercharger SE's have the proper Recaros which makes them difficult to get.

Apparently there is a Hilux variant that has the same seat but it's on a different frame, more faff to make them fit but much more attainable.

I honestly think the MK1a seats are better quality than MK1b seats and more comfortable too.

You'd be lucky to find Recaro's. They come from a SSR-G Hilux Surf which was import only.

These Recaros were called 'Milano', that was the model, so that is the seat and it will be used in other cars. You aren't going to pick up a pair for £50 though. Personally if I was going for Recaros I'd get something decent, like the Recaros out of a DC2, they are far superior to the Milanos' which offer no shoulder support.

Jimi
are they a straight swap onto existing fittings or is there some tinkering to do to frames & rails?

You need to change the mounts on the rails, There's a write up (with pics) on my website , it'll give you a good idea of what is involved.

I liek the MK1a seats, I think they look better and I also found them more comfortable than my original MK1b seats. Though to be fair the MK1a seats came out of a 115K miler and mine had 195K miles on them when I swapped them over.

Just go with whatever feels comfortable to be honest.

I think the mk1a red/back seats would suit that car very well.

Pretty much any seats you like will fit though by modifying/swapping the rails!

There are some great bargains on eBay - I got these, which are quite similar to SE seats at a fraction of the cost:

I love the DC2 Recaros but they fetch some whopping money 2nd hand on eBay!

Ta for the offer Paul, but you're a tad too far from me to collect and I'm not 100% sure I actually want to go for the MK1A seats yet.
cheers
