Radiator top drain willy part number?

Can anyone assist? It is not the one on the Toyota parts system.

MR2 UK/Imort, Celica GT4, all SW20 codes are showing the below part code:



The White one i've removed from my car and the yellow one is the replacement according to Toyota which doesn't fit due to length and different thead.

Is the old white one from the top or the bottom of the radiator?

Clutching at straws: the yellow one for the bottom, and the white one removed from the top?

Or the radiator that it's from isn't an original Toyota one?

White one is from top which I mentioned to Steve@RRG (we're on first name terms i've been in that much recently)

But i'm awaiting a call back as he wasn't there to double check for us.

History of rad is unknown, expected it to be stock as car was only 4 years old when imported and it's never been changed but now i'm unsure with being handed that part, hoped someone could confirm but not like you can just remove it and check given how fun they are to bleed.

It's probably the same as on my car. I haven't found anything that will fit. 1/4 inch thread too small. 3/8 inch thread too small, 1/2 inch thread too small and 3/4 inch thread too big. Mine and probably yours is a 5/8 inch thread which i cannot find anywhere. Being a plumber I have tried every plumbers merchants in town and nobody can help. Local parts suppliers have nothing either. Searched online and no joy either.

For that very reason i keep all the white plugs from cars we break, and then just buy a new O ring.

I know mine weeps a little when bleeding but doubt it lets air in once tightened up but clutching at straws replacing everything I can think of as don't want to accept cracked block or head gasket is the cause of my random overheating

Do Toyota class the top one as a 'drain' c0ck? If not, then I'd suspect the yellow one is for the bottom.

On saying that, I'd imagine the thread to be the same, so look like they're for different radiators?

I'd go with getting a new o-ring for the old one too

Mine weeped a little when bleeding, Toyota told me this wasn't a problem.
It was fine when nipped up.

They should both be the same part, so two required for one car.

The superceded part number came in about a year ago, and i got caught out shortly afterwards. I actually called Toyota GB Tech Helpline, but you can guess what effect that had.

The best solution would be a brass 5/8 male thread to 1/4 inch female thread bush. Then you could screw in a 1/4 inch manual air vent that you could open with a standard radiator bleed key. That would mean bleeding the cooling system was that little bit easier .

IIRC, the thread on the plugs is M16. I'll check in the morning.

That should translate into a 5/8 BSP male thread. I have ordered the adaptor I think will work and a 1/4 manual air vent. If it works I will report back

M16 uses a 15mm tapping drill, and 5/8BSP uses a 21mm tapping drill.

So you're going to screw a plug with a 21mm nominal diameter into a M16 threaded port with a 15mm nominal diameter....

Tell you what, i'll give you a lot more than your £7 if you manage that!!!!

I've tried 1/4 inch BSP, 3/8 inch BSP, 1/2 inch BSP and 3/4 inch BSP. it's between 1/2 BSP and 3/4 BSP so 5/8 BSP could be the solution but I will find out when I try it out on my radiator.

I'm pretty sure that number came up on their system this morning above the new (wrong) part number when we we're having a nosey. For what it's worth i'll pass the info in this thread on as it's not an isolated incident.

I've also found my original receipt so I want my £5.72 back
