Small problem - or maybe not?

Post by Chloke83 »

Driving to work this morning and the engine fan light (i what i think it is, left side, top left in orange) came on and stayed on. I pulled up and left the engine to run whilst i checked the fan which kicked in as usual and was running fine.

I left the engine running for a but and monitored the temp gauge and this stayed steady bang in the middle.
I turned of the engine and started it again and the light didnt come back on (it may do for a longer drive i suppose).

Any ideas why this has happened or if it could mean something else is wrong? Ideally i need to get it sorted before JAE tomorrow!!!! ](*,)

I assume you mean the orange light on the right hand side of the dash?

If so, I had this come on when my alternator belt was slipping and it stayed on permanently when it snapped!

If you have the volt meter on your dash (my NA does...), when the light comes on see if the voltage drops. This will diagnose that there is a charging fault. Then check the belt tension (try twisting the belt, if you can get more than half a turn it's too loose) and condition of belt and both pulleys. Bit of oil on there can cause it to slip without squealing.

Good luck!

Nope it was the one in the top left next to the battery light!

Oh god this is something worse then?

Just looked and it is the "Malfunction indicator lamp"? I have also noticed that the speedo is not working now but all the other dials are. Could this be the issue?

OK after trawling the internet it is showing up as the speed sensor so that would explain why the speedo is "intermittent" at the moment. I did have the dials off yesterday to change the bulbs so i am guessing i havent put it back properly or something so will check it out later.

Cheers for all the helps :thumleft:

Nothing to worry about.

Do you have an import? It could be the speedo converter. I had exactly this.

I changed the converter (or you could remove it) and problem solved

Yes it is an import, however it is most likely my fault as i was fiddling around in that area yesterday and it was fine before.

I was ready to cry as i spent 5 hours on the bloody thing last night in prep for this weekend and a trip to Oxford i need to do tonight.

Panic over!!! \:D/
