Braided Brake Hose Adapter

Post by seankenyon »

Hi everyone,

Ive come to fit some used goodrich braided brake hoses to my 85 Mk1a and ive come across the issue where the union on the hard brake line isnt fully threaded...

Instead of ripping out all the hard lines just to replace the unions is there a male to female adapter that i can use?

If so what specifically do i need to be asking for at my local motor factors?

Thanks, Sean

Sorted :thumleft: see link for those having the same issues but without having to replace the hard lines and unions:

So how does that adaptor work? :?

Hard line is M10x1, and so is the hose.

Yet the adaptor is M10x1 - 1/8BSP.

The braided hoses I've got have M10 female connectors, but the bore isn't deep enough or the union isn't threaded enough, either way I ordered the adapters to avoid replacing the hard lines, I'll report with photos when they arrive later this week

I think the point Peter is making is your adapter has the wrong thread on one end regardless of depth.

BSP and metric threads are never going to be a perfect fit... :?

Results below, not fully tightened but fit fine hand tight :D

The problem - short thread on the union and shallow female connection on the braided hose

So can you confirm if the adaptor is a metric-to-BSP as per the link?

If so, i would never mix and match threads on any fixing, especially on a braking system where there are also the angles of the union ends to also consider, and most definitly would not recommend doing so to any forum member!

If i am incorrect, then my apologies in advance for reading the link to the seller's website in your earlier post.

If i am correct, then it is a dangerous bodge of the highest order.

Peter,

Sorry to sound daft but this is new to me - is it the case that both threads (1 on the hose and the 1 on the union) are metric but one end of the adapter I've bought isn't?

Dave,

The hose is supposedly goodridge

Correct. Your brake pipe unions are M10x1, i.e. 10mm diameter and 1mm pitch. Obviously, both the make and female threads will be the same ensuring a perfect fit.

To use some form of adaptor that joins to both the male and female ends of your joint, you'll need matching M10x1mm threads on both sides of the adaptor which you don't have.

One side of your adaptor is M10x1mm which is correct. The other is BSP (British Standard Pipe), which is a totally different imperial thread.

What you need, not that you'll find it it, is a M10x1mm on both sides of the adaptor.

FWIW, i have experienced the same problem as you when fitting aftermarket hoses to Mk1s. In each case i have made new short lengths of pipe, about 12" long, used a full length male M10x1mm adaptor on the end, and a simple male/female pipe joiner from old to new.

 Sean, M10 x 1.0mm pitch is not interchangeable with 1/8" BSP

1/8" BSP is 28 threads per inch and has an outer diameter of 9.7mm.

M10 x 1.0 is obviously 25.4 threads per inch and has an outer diameter of 10mm.

This is dangerous.

I wouldn't tighten that up any more as you will damage/destroy the thread.

bu88er :pale:

Peter my alternative was to have new copper hard lines made up with fully threaded unions, can you explain your solution or put a pic up cos im not sure what you mean? Sorry, having a brain dead day #-o

Decided to not to fit the braided brake hoses and returned the adapters.

The standard hoses were in really good condition, so were the hard lines & unions, wasnt worth replacing them in my opinion.

So ill have the hoses up for grabs on the for sale section soon
