Rethreading Turbo lid rain tray screws - Any ideas??

Post by Torero »

I am just trying to fit a dual fan kit to my rev 5 but when taking the screws out of the turbo lid I bought some time back, the threaded socket part on the fibre glass has turned to powder. It has affected about 5 of them so no chance of fitting the kit until I sort them out.

I thought of getting some threaded sleeves and drilling out the mounting holes and glueing them in place but the inserts would have to be thin as there is not much meat on the lid sockets.

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful

fill holes with fibre glass filler, wait to dry, drill pilot hole and refit original screws

I used a more pikey method which was evo stick chemical metal putty stuff from halfords and very short, very fat screws.

Try Rivnuts, they work a treat on 90% of stuff I've had to sort on mine.

You drill out the old hole to a larger diameter and insert these much like a rivet but with the required thread running though the middle of it. It holds on thin materials very well through a mix of clamping and cutting into the surrounding material.

Hope that helps John

I think rivnuts would just crack the fibreglass. They're great for fixing things to sheet metal but these are preformed holes with vertical sides - when you squash the rivnut it will just crack the sides of the fibreglass.

Cheers guys :thumleft:

Lots of good advice there, I think I'll start small with Alan's suggestion and if that fails I'll move up to Lee's.

All good stuff, I'll let you know how I get on.

Ive seen external threaded sleeves with an internal thread on a recent thread about water pump stripped threads, also seen this idea in woodwork solutions.
Time-serts talked about in cambelt tensioner thread pulled topic 10/20 headlines below this one by MR2targa?? Drill/tap insert with araldite etc.

Good find Cosmos but a bit too expensive for what I need it for.

Thanks just the same.

Expensive if you buy the whole kit have a word with Peter at S-bits there could well be something similar in B&Q etc in the fixings sections or wood fixings the external/internal threaded tube has a screwdriver slot at one end so you can screw them home good luck, Jewsons maybe.
As said rivnuts will crush and crack nooo.

not sure if it would work but when you make frp moulds you coat the origional part in a type of pva to stop it from sticking.........so could you fibreglass/resin the hole, coat the screw in pva(fully cured) then push it in and when set just unscrew it as the pva will stich to the resin and leave the screw to come out?
