2nd Gear crunch

Post by MR2 Rich »

Have got a slight issue with 2nd gear unless you push it over to the left and are a bit careful changing into 2nd it crunches. Is this likely to be gearbox or bushes or is it impossible to tell without a through inspection? All other gears are fine and if you are careful it doesnt do it and clutch isnt high on the biting point

Its the linkage if you have to move the leaver over to get it to go into gear.
Get someone to move the leaver as you watch the gearbox end so you can see what it is doing

maybe get the gearshift bearing kit :thumleft:

You dont have an Ebay quick shift fitted do you? I had one and it made gears hard to get, went back to stock and it was miles better!! :thumleft:

Have done gearbox oil and linkage bushes and it is still there sounds like synchromesh as I don't think there is anything else external to the gearbox that i can replace?
The bottom bush was quite warn so I'm guessing that is responsible for 2nd gear? I have put washers on to stop any movement because the 2 provided with the kit weren't enough to stop the movement is that correct or should there only be 1 washer either side of the bush and some movement?

The washers only take up slack along the axis of the bush, so in real terms have no effect on the movement in the direction that the cable pulls/pushes.

Sounds like synchro is goosed.

It isn't bad at all just have to be careful going into 2nd new oil and bushes have helped a lot. Other than gearbox out and a rebuild there isn't anything else to do is there?

What's the rough labour cost for putting in a second hand gearbox?

We charge 5 hours. Exactly.

Could give you a rough cost but thought an exact cost would be more useful.
