Peg-type locking wheel nut removal

Post by jon_st205 »

Not surprisingly I've got two wheels with the cr@ppy Toyota peg locking wheel nuts stuck on, the holes have been so badly mashed up previously, I can't get any torque on them. Any tips or suggestions for a locking wheel nut remover that works? PM if preferred, for obvious reasons.

Have tried chiselling off the shroud part but they're so soft that a hammered on socket won't grip.

Cheers,
Jon

not sure what diameter the locking nut is that you are dealing with, but a set of these (there are bigger ones availible) should get just about anything off

Cheers they're 17mm once the shroud is gone.

19mm one should do the job no probs then, I have a set of these and they are quality kit, bite into studs/rounded nuts brilliantly

I cut the shroud off one of those but found that I didn't have a socket that would knock on tight enough to turn the nut

I used an old socket & knocked it sideways a couple of times with a club hammer

That treatment slackened the nut sufficiently to get it off :thumleft:

I had these and they were and absolute ass to get off.

Went to a guy on ebay who welded a big rod to them and undid them in about 15 minutes.

He also runs a lorry recovering business and guarantees to remove them, even had a cup of tea waiting for me :D

I now have a set of those

Am sure they'll be very useful but the largest (19mill) one is not large enough for the wheelnuts

Std. wheelnuts are 21mm aftermarket are usually 19mm, Jon stated that his locking nut with the shroud removed was 17mm which is why I suggested that the 19mm one might fit as they taper in

Aye, my ones are definitely a 17mm diameter circle with the shroud knocked off; remember these are the lockers so don't have flats on.

My set is supposed to turn up tomorrow :thumleft:

Could you grind some rough flats on the end of the nut Jon ?

The 19 mill would probably go on if so

Extreme solution would be to weld a nut on the nut and then undo it that way.

Yes or put the best fitting socket you can find on and then knock it sideways a couple of times with a heavy hammer

That worked for me :thumleft:

Yes, big improvement on easyouts

Much stronger & no drilling required

Good addition to the toolbox :thumleft:
