I've never experienced a slipping clutch in the mk1 - both of mine just suddenly went and exploded. Dowels, springs and inner of the clutch disintegrated :thumleft:

Slipping clutches I've dealt with in the past required centre & pressure plates replacing

It'll only be an issue if the slave isn't releasing properly, but that is very easy to check.

Most likely new clutch required though, a slipping clutch is fairly obvious really I agree.

It's a pretty easy job if u have access to ramps, mine was slipping in high gears so I replaced before it went.

Have ramps & a good pair of axle stands

Usually put the front on the ramps

Changed the gearbox a few years ago

Will make sure slave isn't sticking first

Noticed slipping going up a slope in top gear first

Now it slips in any gear on the level & getting worse

Engine will go from low revs to 6K without any change in road speed :(

This is what mine would do, swapped it out in 3-4 hours following the haynes manual. Only mistake i did was to pump the clutch after with the slave bleed valve open (put new fluid in aswell), i got the master cylinder rod stuck and was lucky that compressed air popped it back out without blowing the seals.

My clutch kit was an Aisin one, same as the one that came out but the new one the springs rattle sometimes which can be annoying.

That was an impressively speedy job Un1eash :thumleft:

Seem to remember it took days when I changed the gearbox

I did clean, rust treat, red oxide & black gloss all the brackets, etc though :)

I have a complete Toda sports clutch here to go on so hoping that will be OK

Was your pressure plate damaged or was it just the centre plate linings worn away like the pic Paul put on here ?

It gets easier with practice :p

Gearbox out and back in again within half a day is easily doable once you've done it a few times and that's having to do it on the driveway. If you had a proper lift etc it'd be even easier.

:)

Yes, I'm a tad slow these days :)

It seems to be giving off a smell

Burning linings I think but doesn't smell like burning clutches used to

My pressure plate and clutch was in better condition then in Pauls picture, the Kit which i paid around £80 for had a new pressure plate, clutch and bearing in it.

Seems reasonable for Fensport Alex

Mine includes a lighter flywheel

:-$ don't tell Tim, he'll have one of his turns
