Driveshaft/Gearbox Seals

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

Has anyone got any pictures or a step by step guide of how to remove the shafts and replace the seals?

Getting the driveshafts out is a doddle, but the actual stubby bits they bolt onto...

That's easy to say but how do you get them out??? I've been told there is a circlip keeping them in. Do I disregard that and break it?

MrT use a slide hammer to batter it out and replace the circlip. IIRC I got the shafts out without breaking the clip, but it's kinda luck of the draw methinks.

Hi,
I did mine last week, RHS only mind. First thing make sure you’ve drained all of the gearbox oil first. I used a hammer and cold chisel to drift out the side shaft- one good hit square on and the side shaft moved out by about an inch, I then pulled it out by hand. My side shaft circlip was intact so was re-used, the oil seal was quite hard to get out with the fear of scratching the housing where it lives so be very careful here I used a blunt metal drift on the inside of the old seal and used a mallet to gently prise / leaver the seal out – try the drift at 180 degrees around the seal and work it out. Fitting the new oil seal was straight forward, first the seal was well lubricated I then used the old seal as a guide on top of the new one and with a mallet tapped it in so it went in square, lubricated the side shaft and then gently pushed it through the new seal and on to the start of the gearbox splines. Got a block of wood that fits the area on the side shaft and gave it a few hits with the mallet until it went home.

Seal was about £9 something from Toyota.

Done about 50 miles since then and wow no more oil leak :thumleft:

Thanks Mario

Anyone else got any pics?

I'm guessing that my seal will be mullered so maybe won't be that hard to remove?

I don't have any pics of the job but my experience was exactly that of mario's.
The only difference was that I hit the flange a little too hard and it shot out, hit the tyre and came back at me at a fair old rate of knots. #-o
Lets be careful out there!!!!

Would it be wise to buy a circlip as well?

Mine is only leaking from one side - should I replace both?

I didn't buy a circlip coz I did'nt know there was one in there and all was fine. I just fixed the side that was leaking.
