[Mk2] [Turbo] Head skimmed every time on HG change?

Post by sidewaysmk2tubby »

Im replacing the HG and wondered if its imperitive to have the head skimmed. Previous gasket wasnt blown by the looks of it?

Also the valves show small amonts of light around the edges when fitted so do these have to be reseated aswell?

Its all like opening a can of worms, one thing after another... :(

Costs £25 to have head skimmed.....Worth the risk of pulling it back down again? I know I wouldn't risk it.

I thought it was going to cost more after i was charged £ 45 on my vectra a couple of years ago. Ok will def get it done before putting all back together.

Also bought some BGA head bolts, are these any good for going up too 300 bhp at the flywheel? Dont want to do all of this again for a loooong while

Even at £45. Still not worth the risk :D

Stock head bolts will do 500 plus, so as long as they are as good as stock, then yes. Fit a Rev 3 gasket too.

Thanks Chris, sorry to ask so much still fairly new too this.

Bought a 3 layer 1mm thick steel HG and gasket set of Ebay, im worried its going to be a s*#t quality though as all together was about 70 notes and had some rubbish cork gaskets for intake mani ect.

Should i get another from ano affiliate or major supplier?

stock rev 3 ones are fine and can be used on rev1/2 but a couple of holes need drilling in it iirc.

skim and full rebuild everytime. You have to do valve seals etc. Many places will do it for around £150.

IMO, don't skim the head if it measures out fine/flat.

I don't see the point if it's flat already.

Agreed.

We have all heads surface ground in prep for new head gasket, but never skimmed.

Ok ill get the surface checked to see if its flat and true all over.
Having trouble finding a place to do this and the valve reseating in my area though.

Starting to wish I got a slightly newer revision with mods done already but that would take away the fun and big learning curve about turbo engines.
