[Mk2] [Generic] Crashing suspension!! ARGHHHHH!!

Post by msherry21 »

Hi all, I'm having a nightmare with the suspension on my rev3 turbo.

I've just replaced my Tein Coilovers with rebuildable shocks, Tein S-type springs, standard 260mm drop links & kept the Tein pillowball top mounts.

The rears "seem" to be fine but the front sounds awful, the suspension is "crashing" on the smallest of bumps. when I fitted the drop links I had to raise the strut really high with a trolley jack to get them to fit (almost until the spring was completely compressed) even with the car on all 4 wheels the springs still seem to be really compressed which could possibly be the issue?

Can anyone help with this? I have no idea how to sort this and its becoming a right pain in the ass!!!

I'm stuck with what to do next and just want to get it fixed so I can enjoy her again.

Thanks for an help.

Michael.

Just took a photo of my suspension as it looks when sitting on all 4 wheels:

As you can see the spring is almost fully compressed. I have just fitted those standard length drop links. Are they too long and causing this problem?

Has anyone else had this problem when fitting lower springs?

Cheers, Michael.

Also have you tryed it with no droplink attached to see if the spring is still compressed?

droplinks just attach the arb...you can drive around without them and you won't hurtle off into the nearest bush. :thumleft:

Would you be able to take a few photos of the suspension while the car is on the ground mate? I just want to see what the difference is. It looks like my drop links are huge and way too big but they are regular length front drop links but they are shoving the spring right upto the top mount.

I don't see how you can have standard ones and I can't, I'm really confused now.

I also have yellow Bilsteins though.... built I believe to work with lower springs whereas the original struts aren't. Still the drop link fixing point should be the same?

Hi,

Did you jack the hole front of the car up off the ground, then fit both drop links.

If you did, then I had this problem when I fitted my Cusco coilovers last year.

I ended up fitting a set of these . .

This is how a standard size 255mm link looked.

This is the shorter 230mm link fitted.

Also, your drop links are on backwards compared to how mine are fitted, dont know if that would make a differance or not :-k .

Ps. The distance between the arb and strut mounting holes was 220mm.
The 230mm droplinks I bought a year ago are still working great.

Did we get to the bottom of this i just fitted apex springs and standard suspension and it looks exactly the same as your springs fully compressed like that. However ride heights etc seems to be right i cant see how it would be any different

Just note its not fully compressed still a bit of spring in there like above, another point msherry your droplink is the wrong way round as mentioned it should go on the inside of the suspension bracket but i dont think this would be the cause of the problem if it is one

either length droplink will fit, just depends on where your arb is set to so that isnt the issue either and as mentioned you don't even need them attached for checking, wouldn't affect your problem......

I have the same issue with the Tein springs, they drop the ride height too much IMO - F39mm/R43mm - which as you can see on your pic leaves very little suspension travel.

I'm looking to swap the springs on mine, not sure yet which I'll go with.

I am putting standard springs on this week to sort the problem for just now.

The near future plan is to put the Tein springs back on once Ive fitted the Koni inserts. I think once the inserts have been added and stiffened up this will stop the crashing out and hopefully increase the travel of the spring slightly.

If that doesn't work, I'm putting it down to the Tein springs being far too low for our roads and I'll fit some Bilstein Springs, giving me the setup which is widely recommended on this forum.

Cheers, Michael.

Just done same as you msherry got mine sorted today and have to say it feels like a new car put on some black bilsteins with some apex springs, ive nothing to compare the springs to apart from bc coilovers but they not crashy at all and are quite comfy!
So if u want to go lower than eibachs id recommend apex they fairly cheap too paid about £120 for em.
