Ah man, I remember doing this with my 1l Corsa. What a noise! 
Never heard it being done with an MR2, and i guess it won't be very effective with all those resonation boxes. Just do yourself a favour and buy an induction kit

I drilled the airbox on my celica gt (96), just added a nice amount of bork to the engine sound.
