insurance!

Post by A.BLAKE »

Just bought my new 2. A lovely 93 gts. However its turning into a bit of a nightmare as the best quote I had so far was 1500 and I didn't tell them its a turbo as the log book just says MR2! Worst quote was.... 4800 lmao again not saying gts! I'm 28 no points on licence and I have held it for 12 years. No, no claims as I was on classic policy before but this seems ridiculous. How much are you guys paying and with who?

Apologies if this sounds harsh, but if you're prepared to withhold information to gain a lower premium, then I wouldn't want you insuring the car with who i'm with - or any company for that matter.

If you fail to tell the insurance company any details, chances are, they'll refuse to pay out in the event of a claim - and render your insurance void. Not so good if anyone else is involved !

My tip would be to not use comparison websites, I don't know if they're all you've used, but try different companies that aren't on the sites, or even if they are they usually have their own automated systems on their websites. Have a chat to the guys that're IMOC affiliates, as some even offer discount for IMOC members for insurance.
I'm only on a standard Rev 3 NA at the moment, but I'm not paying far off that and I haven't had my license very long, so there must be something going wrong somewhere!

Good luck!

Aye...second that, try a classic, limited milage policy...I use Adrian Flux, Classicline was another that I considered before going with Fluxy.

Youz a bit of a noodle for not checking this out first really, gotta have all yer tickets in order...it's not the 80's...lol...producer madness.

My tip would be to insure it properly like a responsible adult, and perhaps checking insurance prices before you buy a car.

Once you've decided to declare it properly then perhaps classicline, sky, Adrian flux or admiral could help you.

As above. Tell your insurance company the real facts or you may as well just burn your premium on the fire for all the good it'll do come claim time... Plus you just become an uninsured driver and that's a real pain for anybody else you hit.
Do it properly and man up... Sky and Flux the obvious next calls.

No I fully understand what you guys are saying if I'm not declaring the full details its not worth the paper its printed on. Just desperate to get on the road, the only glimmer of light is a friend says he can put me on his traders insurance so at the moment I'm holding out for that. Classic seems to be out as its not over 20 years old. This is all such a pain in the ass. Was insured fully comp on a 15 grand sl500 for 400 quid a year, and was thinking a 3 grand toyota might actually be cheaper which is why I didn't check first! thanks for the info guys!

Dodgy. So if you have a stack and it transpires you're not an employee, what happens then?

Sky Insurance, Adrian flux, Aplan. They are the best for a quote...

But dont lie about it as they are specialist and will have people as members on this site that can look into your mods / car etc and void your insurance

I was insuring my MR2 Turbo all mods declaired, uprated turbo, chargecooler, exhaust decat etc etc something like 26 mods or so in total for £770 odd TPFT with Sky and I was 24 with 1 or 2 years ncb and a fault claim against me.

I'm with admiral. If it was just me on there it would be a snip over £600/year. I insure my brother on it too who is 24 with a few years NCB so it's about £900 in total. 5000 miles/year jap import rev3 all mods declared. I'm 33 full NCB, been driving 15 years.

I went with Directline as they were the only company to offer the uninsured driver 'promise' at the time. I'm 27, full clean licence for 10 years with 7 years no claims. Sadly, premiums increased this year (apparently due to massive increase in claims after last winter) and I now pay just over £500. Was £440 last year. Running a standard rev-3. Not sure what Directline are like for modifications though.

Its got to be my address that is doing this to me. Yet another reason to move out of London. Have not seen a 2 in London for a few years and now I know why.
Just thinking, I am an upholsterer, generally do home furniture but occasionally do cars as well....wonder if I could set up my own trade insurance.. Hmmmm

Doesn't need to be as long as his named on the policy, like insuring your wife on the policy she don't work for you.

I know you mean well Steve but this is not why I am here, it frustrates me that people do insure their cars in a fraudulent way but if they want to do it then I am not going to do anything about it, they'll just have themselves to blame when they have a claim. I am not here to look at what people are doing behind the scenes, I'm here because I'm a (Mk1) MR2 enthusiast.

Yes, Mr2's are high risk to insurers, Mr2's in London postcodes are incredibly high risk. Off road or garage parking will help greatly, as will finding an insurer who can take into the account the claim free classic car policy experience.
As has been said, you might as well not insure the car if you are going to be liberal with the truth of what the car is.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.
