How to replace nearside body sill MR2 Jan '98 UK model

Post by Rowland Read »

Hi. My MR2 looks immaculate & cruises happily at 135 but.... exploring underneath with it on a ramp I found that the nearside body sill that runs under the passenger door is rotten & had bodge over the top. The floor pan seems solid & I'm told it needs a new "sill skin"
So please, where's a good place to get one and how does the old one come off? (brute force?)
Any advice welcome

My advice would be...

Don't cruise at 135mph if you value your license LOL

Just to confirm - is yours a Mk2 ( with boot in back ) as in 1998 they were only showing Prototypes of the Roadster at (eg) the British Motor Show ..

It's not a roadster - it's standard mk2 coupe (I think Rev3) with the little boot at back.

The rusty sill (or part of) will need to be cut out and a new peice welded in. Make sure they treat the inside or you'll have the same problems again in a few years. :(

Sill replaced

Post by Rowland Read »

Thanks for the replies. Got new "sill" from Toyota - it's bout half the length of actual sill. Cost £98. Cut out rotten rear part of sill & rot behind it. Removed interior trim & seat beat anchorage from nearside rear interior. This gives access to the screws holding the exterior trim bits around nearside engine intake, removed all this. Welded in new sheet steel around jack point etc. Waxoyled. Cut to size & welded in new sill. primed etc & sprayed to Sunburst Red colour. Job done.

Posting the part number from Toyota for your new half sill would be good and usefull as well.

Yes I'm in this boat right now, 10 pence size hole is now over 18 inches long after trying to find a solid bit of metal. Mines a tin top aswell.
