[Mk2] [Turbo] Spal fans instead of existing radiator fans?

Post by monkeyra »

Is anyone using Spal fans instead of the standard radiators fans on the Mk2 tubby? I've just removed my radiator and the fans, they are rather damn heavy!

I was thinking of doing this once i had some more cashflow, can't see why there would be a problem using spal fans.

Would be a good upgrade to do for sure.

Weight wise would be good but for power just run a switch to the sensor on the radiator when you switch it the fans will then run flat out which pulls through some serious air. As standard you never hear them running flat out unless you switch the aircon on,run the wire from one side of the sensor up to the switch then from the other side of the switch back down to the radiator sensor it is just an earth switch sensor job done if you unplug the sensor the fans run all the time :thumleft:

I'm using two on the front as the stock fans are huge and a bit lacking in flow, especially after 19 years on the car! I did this at the same time as replacing my radiator. From memory I used 12" although they could have been 14". Wired up to stock wiring system.

Just out of interest, what did all that set you back?

I think it was around £150 from ebay
it came with the fans and shroud allready fitted.
The fitment was really good, all aligned properly,
the fan switch boss and the bleed nipple were in the right place.
Only thing i had to do was trim with a dremmel around the slam panel where the bleed nipple pokes through,no biggie really.
The core is slightly thicker than stock as well.

I know a couple of members are not keen on the shroud idea, thinking that it would restrict flow, but i think this is more than compensated for in the amount of air these 10 bladed high rpm fans can move.

on a side note,
I gave some thought to protecting the new radiator,
i dont like the mesh that is generally available ,which is used to mesh the front bumper, allways seems too flimsy and bendy.
I took one off a rover 45 front bumper, its more substantial having a strengthening frame around its edges,
it was allmost a direct fit,and feels so much stronger :thumleft:

Blimey, £150 is a bargain. The fans alone price up to around the £70+ mark!
