Hard to get into third gear sometimes

Post by Marf »

Having some shifting issues, mainly into third, sometimes second.

Literally feels like I'm pushing against a solid object when trying to get the gear. No crunching, no grinding, it just will not go in.

I did have a new clutch 2 months ago, but the problem has only appeared in the past couple of weeks.

I've tried adjusting the rod between the clutch pedal and master cylinder and it is a little better, but not much.

Not sure if I should wind the rod out even more or if my box is starting to die.

id go with polybushed gear linkage, or even back to stock (tho that would be some grief!)

i went back from a shortshift and solid bearing to stock shifter and these bushes, and shifting felt alot easier....

Ta

Were you having any shifting problems like I am though, or was it just not feeling as good as it could, which this kit sorted out?

It's getting really frustrating not to be able to shift reliably into third having accelerated right through second.

mine was tough to get into 2nd, those changes made it easier.
i wouldnt like to say this will solve your problem, but will improve the feel of selecting gears either way compared to solid bushings imo.

sorry to hi jack your thread but i was gonna post with the same kinda problem, but might as well post in here. im basically getting the same issue, but in reverse order lol i get get into 3rd easy, but its sometimes (more so when car is warm) it gets stuck in 3rd and i have to do a double pull on the gear stick to get it out of 3rd, if im changing up its fine, but if i leave it in 3rd for a little while it does it. would getting that bush kit help? or is mine something else?

i too have a pretty new clutch and there is no crunching

One other thought - the driveshaft oil seals are known to leak and you slowly loose your gearbox oil, which would cause difficult shifts.

Would be worth just checking the level of the oil in the gearbox ( take off nut on the side, stick your finger through and check there's oil at that level and if not top up ...

FWIW, I've used Redline MT90 and 75W90NS in my old Mk2 Turbo and shifts did feel smoother after the oil change.

My 3rd gear synchro was shafted.

What did it set you back and who rebuilt the box?
