"WOO" sound under engine revs. Can't figure it out? **UPDATE P5**

Post by bluesmoke »

Just out driving and have pulled up as the tubby seems to be making a "WOO" noise when revved. Never heard anything like it before. Anybody got any ideas?

OK, further investigation reveals I've lost boost. I can get to 0.5/1.0psi, and that's it.

Sounds like you've lost the blades from the exhaust side of the turbo...

Jesus, how can I work out whether it's this or a leak?

EDIT: And what would cause this?

remove air filter and put hand over inlet to block air flow with engine running....a big leak will let the car run, a small leak will howl like a b1tch and if theres no leak it will stall within a couple of seconds

whilst you are there have a feel of the turbo shaft, but obviously do that with the engine off..

Ok thank you. Do you mean put my hand over the turbo, where the pipe from the filter normally goes?

Cheers, will keep you in mind. Mine's a hybrid with cut back blades, but unfortunately I don't know its origin.

Juat take the pipe off the turbo inlet while the car is running, doesnt matter if it stalls, pull it off and quickly see if the compressor wheel is turning, if its not, fair chance the turbine wheel has parted company

Right I have had a go witht his today but no luck. Firstly, I took the turbo intake pipe off when the car was running. The compressor wheel was spinning like the clappers, so I don't believe it has lost its blades on the exhaust side?

I tightened up all of the clamps, and felt around all of the pipes for splits but couldn't find anything.... :(

When I had the pipe off the turbo, I covered it over with my hand and in 4 out of 5 attempts it ran just fine, and only stalled on one of the 5 occasions.

So not sure where to go next. Might have to take all the IC pipework apart and remove all the hoses and joiners and properly pour over them?

Here's a video from inside the cabin, where I seem to be able to hear the sound much better than I do outside the car, strangely.

Hi,

That is the sound of a broken turbine wheel :( when you get the turbo off the car I would expect to see the turbine wheel still in place but the fins all smashed up.

Hope you get it sorted soon,

Kev.

On which side? The wheel on the intake side is fully intact.

sounds like a pidgeon ? dead turbo. Look at the exhaust side. There's bound to be a fin or two broken off the exhaust compressor. :(

Ok guys, what's the easiest way to remove the turbo and check it out? Don't wanna screw up?

The exhaust side is obviously still there or the turbine on the intake side wouldn't spin, but I guess the whole thing wouldn't need to be intact for that to still happen :(

Hi,

The turbine wheel is the exhaust side.

I'm not sure of the easiest way to 100% confirm the blades are broken though, if you don't find bits of them in your exhaust system you could remove the downpipe and take a look at the turbine wheel.

If you can confirm the turbos broken. . . I fitted a ct20b a couple of days ago so if you start a new thread I would be happy to talk you through changing the turbo.

Ok cool. Can I check just by unbolting the decat from the turbo, or will I have to completely remove it?
