Damaged Flywheel - where can I get a replacement quickly?

Post by Jimbo_Jet »

Got my car in the garage now having its slipping clutch replaced and I’ve just been told I need a new flywheel as my existing one has hairline cracks in.

First of all, does this usually happen and is it a problem? Secondly, where can I get a new flywheel from quickly as my car is stuck in the garage until I get another one? Can I use one from a MK1 breaker?

Thanks

Can't see why you shouldn't use a secondhand F/W Jimbo

Never heard anything about cracking though

Have you checked the For Sale section on here ?

Some members have fitted an alloy F/W & may have a standard one for sale

Thanks! Just been looking at them, was hoping to find a cheap lightened one in the UK somewhere but they'll all in the US :? and I need it asap.

Just found out that TCB parts have a used one in stock so they're digging it out to check the size. When you measure a flywheel is it to the end of the plate or to the end of the teeth around the perimeter?

They need to measure the diameter of the smooth mating surface on the flywheel. Both mk1a and b flywheels are the same physical size.

Oh right, thanks! My garage has just come back to me and said 268mm to the outer perimeter, so it's the same for both?

Yep, you need the mating face which will be either 200 ish (mk1 a) or 215 ish (mk1 b).

You can fit either, just means you'd need to get a clutch to match.

So what's this about hairline cracks Jimbo ?

Whereabouts on the F/W are they

Does anyone know the likely cause ?

Do you have any proof of this? or is this your opinion? becuase such comments could be seen as libelous.

Okay, they are xxxx from my opinion. I would rather spend £280 on a fidanza than one costing £111 from the states.

Just been shown my old flywheel while still on the car with an LED lamp. There are a dozen or so tiny, tiny, cracks the length of a small grain of rice, pointing away from the centre of the FW. They are in the matting surface of the fly where the clutch grips it.

He said he commonly sees this in Scooby's when he changes the clutch.

Wish I knew this was coming as I would have saved for a fidanza as can't afford the extra £220+ it would have cost on the second hand one I've just got. #-o

A lot of mechanics may have missed those tiny cracks Jimbo

Good job he'd seen it before on the Scoobys & knew what to look for

Stress cracking from sudden clutch engagement at high revs perhaps ?

That's not really my driving style but I do clutch slip in first a bit some times for a fast take off. But never rev it up and just drop the clutch.

Mind you, down changes at speed on B road balts have been crunchy or stiff for a year now until I had my master cylinder changed so maybe that did it?

Wondered if your car had been used on track

Perhaps by a previous owner ?

How long have you owned it ?

Have had mine getting on for 15 years now & things definately happened to it before. Some sort of accident, a respray, new w'screen to name a few :)

I love the little beast dearly nevertheless
