[Mk2] [Turbo] How to wire up headunit - do I need an adapter??..

Post by Pete_MR2 »

Hi all,

I've just got my self a very basic Kenwood CD player for my MR2 Turbo and before I start listening to the hype of how hard it is to install I thought I'd ask you guys of how it's done.

On all my previous cars (although non were imports) all I've basically done is mooch to Halfords, buy an adapter and connect the wires!! Easy as that 8)

Is this just what I do now or do I need to do something different?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Oh... One more thing.. I'm sure it's all pretty much as standard in terms of speakers.

Cheers 8)

Could be easy as that, depends if your car has the "premium" audio system found in UK cars as an option and Jap cars. What connectors do you have in the dash ?

Cheers for the quick reply!!

As far as I'm aware (the car is kept at my parents so I'll check for sure tmoz) there's allot of wires (obviously) leading to a few small White connectors that look identical to those put in adapters etc.

Hope that make sense!!

I'll get more info + pics up tmoz :D

Oh jeez, that's a birdsnest and a half! It looks as though someone's chopped the standard connectors off and wired it in manually. Unless that mess of wires goes back to 2/3 biggish connectors?

Best bet would be to source the OE connectors from a breaker, chop all that crap off and wire those to the loom. THEN you can use an audioleads (or is it autoleads?) wiring adaptor to plug straight into your stereo. Which is what the previous owner should have done to begin with!

Oh there's allot of wires :(

Seeing as I don't have a clue whatsoever regards wireing headunits up it looks like car sound will be getting a visit

All the wiring does however lead to two main White connectors (1st pic) are these the ones that go into the adapter...?

Cheers :D

Can you unplug all that wiring from the car and just leave the 2 main connectors ?

oh boy! it should have 2 rectangle white connectors peeking out from the dash, that's it.. at least the standard system... I'd start from scratch!
