[Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket, which one?

Post by b16hbg »

Hi all, have a rev2 turbo and its leaking oil of course. I believe its coming from the head gasket. I'm planning on upping boost, aftermarket IC, larger injectors and management eventually. My question is what head gasket to go for and having never replaced a hg on a turbo'd motor before I also need to know if im gonna have to have specific measurements for thickness of gasket after having the head skimmed? I would imagine compression ratios are alot more important for a turbo than NA, I have been looking at cometic? But still not sure. any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks

I think you have it slightly confused. If you're losing oil from the top end of the motor, it's likely to be the camcover gasket, not the head gasket. Camcover gasket is about £15 or so from either Mr T or one of the affiliates on here (TCB, GTSChris etc).

However, if you plan on doing those mods then yes, it'd be a good move to upgrade from the paper head gasket to a MLS (multi layer steel) one. The standard rev3 gasket is pretty good, certainly good enough for modest power increase or you can indeed go after market with the likes of Cometic etc.

As for the thickness, as long as you get a standard thickness one you shouldn't (I don't think, I'm not certain!) have any worries over altering the compression ratio.

Hope that helps :)

Thats great help thanks! I'm pretty certain its leaking out the side of the head and on to the gearbox as I've replaced the cam cover gasket nd it has definitely sealed

Fibre head gasket can leak from passenger side of head, close to front corner, where the oil passes through head gasket up to oil pressure switch and cams.

All OEM gaskets are 1mm, so unless you specifically set out to buy a thicker one, 1mm is what you'll end up with.

Might possibly be the o-ring behind the dizzy body unless as Peter said, it's coming out of the corner.

because ive had success reusing wills rings in the past on my turbo'd mi16 motor. saves having to get a headgasket every time i want to take the head off to do something.

and at the time i couldnt wait to machine them in!
