Ps3 fan test - just cleared out a he'll of a lot of dust.

On the fat PS3 turn off the unit from the back switch then hold the eject button and turn it back on. It spins up the fan to silly speeds for a few secs blowing out a load of crap.

Mine sounds a bit better now. Never knew this and thought I'd share.

Works for the slim too apparently, although as there's no on/off switch at the back you have to unplug/plug the power cable instead.

lol

Well i did a bit more digging and this post on a forum makes the most sense to me.

alrught down to business, heres some background on me - i have been working with microelectronics for almost 6 years now and took advanced electronics and robotics in high school, and i have done circuit design for the past 3 years

inorder to make the fan go this fast the system is NOT OVERHEATING WHATSOEVER!

basically how it works is that the motor in the fan is controlled by a speed controller which part of the ps3's onboard systems control, so when the temperature goes up, the thermister/thermocouple detects the temperature and the ps3 tells the fan speed controller how fast to spin the fan.

when you use a "fan test/clean" mode you are telling the ps3 to overide the software that calculates fan speed based on temperature and to tell the fan controller to kick the fan up to 100% speed therefore it is IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ANY DAMAGE FROM A FAN TEST MODE PERIOD!

the most that COULD happen is the fet's in the motor controller could burn out due to use of this option which could render the fan inoperable, but so can normal use.

in other words: the fan test mode couldnt damage the system any more than running it normally.

Stops on its own after a short time, if you've got a PS3 out of warranty then its better to open it up and vacuum out the dust and crap and stuff

Much better to open it up and vac out all the crud, there's plenty of guides on YouTube on how to strip it down

I'm more concerned as to why he threw the bin out of the window after the controller.
