Drifting

Post by Dan23 »

does anyone drift their mk1? if so would you be so kind to run me through the your set ups?

reason i ask is cos i wanna start drifting mine, now iv had a few s13s and to flip the back out on them was a doddle, half the time they went out on me even when i didnt want them to lol, but they was all FI and one was running 220bhp the other 309bhp, but i find the back of the MR2 pretty stable and its never once twitched on me (probably jinxed myself now) and im kinda putting it down to not having the sudden surge of power a FI car has.

before anyone says it im not talking about going round like a xxxx drifting the roads, all would be done in the correct places, would just liek the back to be a bit more dangerous i guess lol

You're going to struggle to drift a mk1. Mid engined cars are always a lot harder to drift than front engined as having the weight further back makes it both harder to get the back moving and harder to catch when it does break loose, on top of that a mk1 really doesn't have the power for drifting.

yeah i see where you are coming from with the rear engine stuff, just had some people say they are very twitchy at the rear, specially when wet, me personally never have had this issue, i get alot of understeer mind but thats another story lol

i dont think lack of power so much of a issue is it? thats why they put a hand brake in them

Soft rear and solid front suspension seemed to work on Cassi's Mk1.

Well 'proper' drifting generally consists of keeping the wheels spinning as much as possible to keep the grip down at the rear and allow you to prolong the drift. Spinning the wheels continuously at speed generally requires big power or a greasy surface.

Good front tyres used with very bad (marshal, nankang, barras, stunner etc) rears has always worked for me on an n/a. You could also try some rear toe out.

Three options...

1) Put some Michelin pilot sports on the front and dangjangdenong tyres on the rear

2) Adjust the rear toe by a few degrees

3) Lob a V6 or 3s-gte in the back, you can run any tyre you like, won't matter :)

Also LSD is a must.

You're going to struggle if you are used to s13's.. Mk1s are compeltely different.
I let Lex who runs drift what you bring have a go in my 1.5 and even with 250BHP he was struggling.. getting the back end out is easy enough but swinging it back the other way and catching it isn't. Mid engined cars are not good for drifting.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Not the car for drifting in all honesty. Not even worth trying with an open diff.

You need a FR setup like the ever popular S13 et al.

What does 'FI' stand for? Couldn't work it out.

Something no one else mentioned, run the rear tyres at 45psi.

Pity you are so far away Dan, may well be going up to have a bash at a drift day at Buxton Raceway on Saturday. A tenner to get in and drift. Sorted! :+:

There's Blyton Hill which has just opened, that's a lot nearer.

You could always get an AE86. ;) Harder to drift due to much less power.

Problem with the ae86 is they are quite had to come by and tens to be pretty expensive to buy whereas you can pick up a pretty basic s13 for about £600 if not less and I know my way round them as iv had a few

Other retro cool option is KE70 with AE86 running gear. All the fun, half the price. :+:

Also S13's are like a boat out of the box, so need a lot of modding suspender wise. Any converted KE70 is already likely to have this done, though you could of course buy an S13 (Dirty Neesan etc) that is already set up, but it'll always be a 'Dirty Neeesan'. ;)

KE70s are getting just as expensive as an 86 from what I've seen. #-o

I wonder how well an ickle Starlet would drift with a 4AGE in it.
