problem starting - help please

Hi,
I've just tried to start my Mark3 (2002) and it's not firing, just a clicking noise and the engine light remains on. Any one know what the cause could be please?

if there is no spining whiring noise it be a dead batt. guessing the clicking is fast

Defo sounds like the battery, first port of call anyway.
