Looking at buying this mr2 mk2, what to look for? advice pointers please.

Post by scottedlin19 »

Hi,

Looking to buy an MR2 Mk2 as a daily runner, I have spotted one with around 66,000 miles, just had cambelt done, its in black, 1997 model, full leather, A/C.

Looks in good condition, Im going to go see the car soon.

Anything to really look for? It says its got full service history.

How much would you say the car is worth? Whats fuel consumption like?

Also I would want to fit a combat rear spoiler to it as this car was the year before they introduced it, so is it an easy job?

Its up for £2995, I would post the URL but I havnt done enough posts or somet...

So is it worth that/what do you think I should try to get off it..

Thanks in advance.

Make sure whatever one you get the bodywork is as near enough mint as can be.

All the mechanicals can be easily fixed.

Fitting a rev5 spoiler is very easy. 6 nuts in total.

£2995 is on the very expensive side for an N/A. I'd hold out and get a good one from here for arounf the £2000 mark.

I know it's not black which is the best colour.

Seen the red before but has much higher mileage, also have a car I need to trade in so dealer is easier for me.

How many miles do these engines go for generally?

if they are maintained properly they hit 200k miles easy. Replacement parts and engines are available second hand if you're on the budget, but toyota still stocks most parts for them.

I wouldn't worry about mileage.

If your buying a uk car rust is the main thing to look for. Make sure you get underneath and give it good poke.

What's the delears site?

If that's a 10th anniversary car then I'm Dutch.

Sell the mud flaps and get half the money back :D

Looks a decent car but a bit pricey IMO...

Looks a nice enough car.

Looks polished for the photos so i wouldn't go off the pics to much.

Some people are finding it hard to sell theirs for £1500. I really dont' think you need to be spending 3 grand though.

The dealer's probably given £1500 to £2000 at best for that as a trade in.

Get your mate to ring up and offer him £2000 as it isn't a turbo, then you go in the next day and try and get a steal.

There's loads of cars around so you really can be picky, it's a buyers market for sure.

It is a bit pricey so I'm gonna go in low, but looking on autotrader can't find much else with low miles at decent price, needs to be a dealer really.

Might go in and offer 2k for it, what reasons can i use to knock money off?
Really want a fine kept standard car that's why this one interests me, plus can't insure a turbo.

Anyone know of any other potential cars? Kinda worried about high milers, maybe I shouldn't be.

I wouldnt worry about high milage, overall condition of the car is the key.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Well been looking on auto trader, cant seem to find much else thats got what i want for alot cheaper.

Want T-bar, Leather, and air con if possible.

Prefer the ones after 1996 aswell. Found another black one for 2495 thats done more miles, doesnt have air con, but is a year newer. But it has some big black lensos on it and looks lowered, would prefer a standard one.

Will go see it sunday I think, and if im interested bid really low.

It may have been lowered but at least the springs should be fairly fresh and not over 15 years old.

You can always sell aftermarket wheels and get yourself a set of stock wheels to go on, you're probably going to have to buy tyres anyway.

Here is the place to look for a car, you can check the owner's posts to see what sort of driver you think he is and see what problems , repairs he has had with the car.

Main things to look for are ....

Cambelt change
Radiator change
Body panel condition
RUST, this will kill your car faster than you think and be expensive to hold off.

Have you tried an ins quote for the turbo model?

I tried a quote on one car and it came up as the same as the N/A strangely.

Yeah I would preferably buy off an owners forum, but I do like the black ones, if a black one is going and rev 4/5 I would be interested.

You're best off talking to an import specialist insurer for a quote on a turbo :thumleft:
