[Mk2] [Turbo] Anyone fitted an oil cooler?

Post by ^Trickster^ »

Has anyone on here fitted an oil cooler via a sandwich plate?

I have an oil cooler, i can get lines made up no problem, but im trying to find a sandwich plate, can anyone point me in the direction of a good quality one?

Also are there any interference problems with the dipstick tube?

Thanks

I'm due to shortly, but all i'd say, is get a thermostatic one, as with just a poverty spec one, the oil will be running trough it constantly & take an eternity to warm up.

I've got a Mocal kit, and had a nosey online & can buy parts individually, example: http://www.thinkauto.com/cgi-bin/sh0000 ... 1_21OTSP1X

probabl other places you can get them from for a bit cheaper, just the first one I found!

Thanks mate, what about interference issues with the dipstick tube?

Thats where I am mounting mine, I dont want to relocate the filter, not a fan of having oil lines everywhere, i just want 2 short lines to feed the cooler.

Still wondering if there is any interference with the dipstick tub lol

Can't help you with whether it fouls or not as I've not fitted it yet, but from having a visual, all should be good!

A sump spacer is a good way to help keep oil temps in check.

I got one of those PP sump spacers, increases capacity by around 500c.
More oil = more area to spread the heat across.

I also had one of those PP oil cooler kits which I've removed for the time being.

I can't be sure where the best place to measure oil temps are however. So it could be tricky when actually trying to log these temps to see real changes. At present I have a sump plug style oil temp gauge.
Folks could get all kinds of different readings dependent on location.
Temps could also depend on if turbo is oil and/water cooled as well I'd guess.

I run a morose pan, it holds more oil and helps reduce temp

What thread size are our filters? and what extension bolt is required?

Steve that site is pretty well priced for a thermostatic plate i think

According to Fensport site, 3/4 - 16 UNF

And yeah, after having a nosey round, those prices don't seen to bad! Lol

How does the thermostat setup work on these?

Does it bypass the cooler until a temperature is reached and then the thermostat diverts it to go through the cooler?

Im curious as to how you fill the system up and ensure the cooler is filled up, wouldnt like to think i had an air pocket in there and the engine ran without oil for a few seconds at a high rpm while driving, im sure there is an obvious solution, just curious.

Spot on there. It circulates like stock, then at x temp it opens allowing oil to flow through cooler.
As for filling, erm, not got that far yet, so presume it's a case of back filling down a pipe, then connect to sandwich plate then run up to temp. The oil feed & return should be positioned at top of cooler meaning no air traps. Any air will get pushed back into the sump then be out of the pressured system.
Just presume on oil changes, you'd drain stock amour of oil from sump & refill, then add new oil, don't know how you'd go about changing the oil innthe cooler. Unless you drain & refill separately?? Or work on it only being a small amount & if changed regularly won't affect anything??? Anyone any ideas?

Yeh I was think along those lines of filling it separately, not too concerned about it being drained for oil changes.

Anyone with experience?

What revision are you on Graeme? I tried fitting mine to my rev1 engine today & had to concede defeat. The outlets from the sandwich plate would only really sit either side of the dipstick tube. Problem then was that the -10AN fittings wouldn't go on due to fouling on the dipstick tube ](*,)

Only way I can think of getting round it, is to get a filter relocation kit, as they have the pipes coming out of the top of the plate.

Has anyone fitted one to a rev1/2 engine?

Mine is a rev 1 block mate, have you took the bolt out that holds the dipstick tube? I have heard people make a bracket to hold it out of the way, you do get quite a lot of movement on them

Really? Ooh, might be an option to rectify it then! Lol

Damn that stupid position of oil filters. Had to unsure the smoke of burning oil off manifold from taking filter off! ](*,)

I have a rev 2 block and one of the poverty spec coolers (no stat). Mine might be very different to yours as my kit includes a filter relocator too. I've got -10AN lines on the sandwich plate and it clears the dipstick. I'll look for some pics.....
