mounting gauges in the centre console

Post by jasongtr »

i really dont like the stuck on look, or piller mounted gauges, so i had an idea to mount some 52mm dials in the centre console, they wont quite fit in a single din sized area i dont think (but if anyone has got some then post up a pic). again they wont fit correctly where the vents are, so i plan to chop the plastic bar below the vents/above the double din slot and refix it in the middle of the double din. so id have a single din stereo then the bar then a bigger area to fit the gauges, the new rail can be fibreglassed into place and then have a piece of ali plate fixed into place where the gauges will be mounted. then paint it all as nice subtle colour

i think i can easily get 4 gauges in there, i have a fuel pressure one, i need a wideband afr (for the supercharger), maybe an oil temp and 1 other.

anyone done something similar to keep mounting gauges looking as subtle as poss without dash top pods or the a pillar ones

was that in place of a stereo?

this is what ive just done, i could i think squeeze 5 in there but 3 with better spacing would look miles better

cut out the centre bar for the vents and the one below it

refix the long bar to make a single din space

and before proper fixing make sure the stereo is fine

I've not got any pics of mine fitted, but I've got a triple gauge single din adapter. The gauges don't look like they'll overhang the adapter plate, but like I say, I haven't fitted it yet. I'm also planning a couple of trick bits - one I think I stole from here - chargecooler coolant temp snesor (with a twist), which I'm going to mount in the other DIN slot.

Then I'm planning something even better for the heaters/stereo sloution, but it'll probably never happen.

Will be watching how yours turns out though - could be good.

I need to locate 2 60mm gauges, and pillar pods aren't an option.

Couldn't you fabricate some narrower vents (if losing the vents is of any issue)?

I think the clock is a bit of a waste of premium space too. Don't know many stereos that don't tell you the time....

possibly, making a slot for narrow vents is not problem as i have other stereo surrounds i could use the rail from but its the vents themselves

You could use some vents from a Mazda - iirc, they are round, and might look nice against a few round gauges....

Off topic a bit, but do you have any engine hangers off a rev 3 (NA or turbo) from the cambelt end?

Neither :D

It's the bit that bolts into the head by the exhaust manifold. Part 12283 in the bottom left of this picture:

http://www.ayrpark.plus.com/epc/toyota/ ... _1993.html

They look the same on rev 2 & 3, but the two holes at the top are slightly further apart on one of them.
