Hi all,
Could anyone please advise me on what spark plugs and oil + filter i should use to service my Rev 2 Turbo with.
Ive increased the boost, fitted an aftermarket intercooler, de cat pipe and external induction kit to the motor.
Cheers
Pete

well u should use a genuine toyo filter. some use aftermarket but I killed my na by doing this ... spun a bearing when some shizzle slipped through the crank! I am intrested to here about spark plugs....I know djpkins splashed out 90 odd quid on a set but don't know which ones, pm him maybe, he is a good old boy
Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
Oil filter -genuine Toyota one from stealership or a place like my chosen supplier Rogue motorsport as I'd rather pout the money through them.
Oil. There's so much on here about oil it's daft, personally I've run a stock gen 23SGE, modified gen 43SGE (my current SW20), a gen 3 3SGTE with mild mods and currently as well as my SW20 a mildly tuned JZS147 Aristo at about 320-330Bhp -all on Castrol Magnatec 10W40 semi-synth as well as most of the other cars I've ever had. That oil was recommended each time by the "specialist" looking after that marque of car rather than a "specialist" oil supplier.
It's a good enough oil but I do change it regularly -2-3 times a year with a genuine oil filter every second time. It's good if you keep a clean engine regime and drop it often enough. Which is economical to do with it.
Spark plugs I'm not so sure on, I change mine every 2-3 years regardless. I always stick by NGK -couldn't get the grade 7's for love nor money last year so I have grade 6's in mine at the mo. Soon as grad 7's are back in stock I'll get them.

Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
I know a lot of guys swear by just using copper plugs and changing them often, I think ngk bkr7e are the colder plugs, with bkr6e being suitable for standard boost.
Copper plugs supposedly give a better, fatter spark and are considerably cheaper than iridium/platinum.

...what are you comparing it to?
Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
I just had a quick search and seen plugs for well over a.ton. I norm pay about 30quid
even in track car
how much bhp can ya gain from top end plugs?

Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
Copper plugs are safer and often prefered by the big power guys because the tips/ceramic bit on Iridium type plugs can crack under extreme battering and a bit of det...then you have the tip of a plug winging its way through your valves/piston...never re-gap iridium plugs as this will also make them prone to breaking off.
There is a really good thread on here all about this, a bit old now, I'll try to drag it up.
I have a rev2 tubby with mild bolt on mods pulling around 280...290...on a good day...lol...and I have a set of HKS platinum plugs in it...sweet as a nut but very expensive really..when I change, I will try the copper equivilent....and a porche oil filter...had it on scince last oil change and it's all good, oil still looks like dark honey...due for a change now actually.

Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
Oil also depends on what the car is doing.....
Manufacturers recommend an oil based on a service interval and overall protection of the engine for that given period. If the car was driven hard all the time, but the oil is changed more frequently, a different oil grade might be recommended.
Full synthetics are more tolerant to heat, but rather than plagiarise someone else's work, here are some links:

Still in the garage...
..the only thing I can promise for sure is slow progress.
May 2015
just have this niggling thought that if I rip out the wiring, then the car will never get out of the garage again.

Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
yeah..... this is a very opinionated topic, djpkins could give u a better answer but yes its fine use semi or fully if you can afford it!
Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
fully synthetic 10-40w is what you want matey...Tesco's were doing 4ltr's of 10-40w Magnatec for £20...change your oil filter as well...always run your car down if you've been banging it, or if you have a turbo timer...use it.
Camskill are the dogs 8ollox, really has served me well over the years...always best to stick up a post on here if your unsure or want to see your options...I have just sent my mate a folder full of usefull links for mr2 stuff, had to actually send it to him through the post cos I just couldn't work out how to upload it and e-mail it to him...if you know how...then tell me and I'll send you a copy shops, info, technical stuff etc.

This has been covered many times before.
If you search for oilman's posts you'll get some info.
I run an Rev 2 Turbo, with increased boost, decat, free'er flowing exhaust etc.
I use:
Fuchs TITAN SUPERSYN 5W-40 Fully Synthetic Oil
Genuine Toyota filter
BKR7E1X (Cold grade) Platinum Plugs

Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
It seems i'm probably the only person who uses NGK PFR7B which are grade 7 platinum plugs. They work great especially as it means they dont need changing every oil change especially with the 205cc on top of em. Also the oe plug for the 3SGTE is a platinum.
Re: Best Spark Plugs and Oil - Rev 2 Turbo - Increased Boost
I fitted one grade cooler plugs at the last service and I've found that when I tend to hit the gas it hesitates until its had a couple of go's to clear its throat so to speak.
I'm only running .9 bar with airfilter exhaust etc so I think I will go back to normal grade unless I go to one bar.
