yeah don't think i'd be attempting this myself, i once welded the tank on my car(my fist ever car at age 17, 1972 MG midget), filled it up washed it out, done everything i could to make sure it was safe, my brother, p1$$ing about with the welding rig, popped the flame into the hole in the tank, it went BOOOOM!!!!!!!!! and jumped about 6ft in the air, it was fine to weld after that :D

Years ago I had an old motorbike tank seam welded where it had started to split by where the rear bracket was spot welded on. It had been sitting for a year with no petrol in and the filler cap removed but the guy welding it was still nervous. Apparently he jumped quite a bit when some of his colleagues crept up behind him and shouted "bang".

Cheers,
Kingsley.

Upload your pics to a host like photobucket, then copy the link on the photobucket site for that pic into your reply, it will have image tags wrapped around it like this [ img ] link address here [ /img ] , but without the spaces.

"One" of my Audi A5 gearboxes arrived today, all your fault Ross, i'm buying them in bulk!

The great news is this box weighs a lot less than my A4 box in my Mk1, i wish this had been around when i was doing that project, i reckon it's a good 20kgs lighter. The first thing that's very apparent is the diff area, i am going to have to remove engine block material in this area on the V12 (V8 looks like it will need modifying too), but it shouldn't be a huge problem.

Some dimensions for the tranny whores...

Image

Oops! wrong link! That'll teach me for typing tranny whore into google :)

The middle of the output shafts are 45mm from the bellhousing face, now i have estimated i will need a 1" thick adapter plate on the V12, but the shafts sit 7" further forward on this box than the older A4 unit, so by my maths i am gaining 4.25" of space by using this gearbox, that's a huge amount. It also means on a V8 swap i gain 5.25", that definately puts the Audi V8 inside the engine bay without having to cut the front wall (at least at the bottom of it and should only need a top access panel if that)

Image

So, so far it's all good news, although there is a very long way to go.

Buying in bulk lol I can't even find one lol. I think a friend of yours picked my gearbox up today for a atom replica. Paul? V8 mk1?

What you guys thinking about the engine management? I see omex do a system for a 12 cylinder, think this might be capable of handling a turbo conversion too? Would you be able to shed some light on this?

Cheers

I don't know anything about the Atom rep sorry!

I will be using a simple megajolt and twin EDIS6 coilpacks to provide sparks on my V12, i don't need a full standalone because i'm running it on LPG which controls the fuelling itself, all very simple.

That half shaft must run pretty close to the clutch. Is it pretty tight in there?

It's design is actually not like anything you will have seen before, being 2010 technology it's all pretty new stuff.

The clutch AND flywheel is actually on the gearbox side of that shaft, the shaft then runs inside a channel between the back of the flywheel and a transmission plate which then bolts to a starter ringear flexplate, so it goes engine>Ringear>transmission plate>shaft>flywheel>clutch>release bearing.

This enables the shaft to be mounted so far forward, Audi did this to combat the understeer problem in them by moving the front axle forward.

Lucky for us they did or there would be no V12 chance at all.

It sounds like you have the facelift motor with the oil filler between the banks at the front as per this pic,
Image

This is what I suggested to Paul to get around the filler neck in the way but then it puts the oil filler right at the back if you reverse the motor.

Indeed, that filler neck placement would not work i don't think, it should be pretty easy to fit a filler neck somewhere else though.
