Never used the a30's so can't comment on that.

They use the optical output at the back of the ps3 and that can provide the required signal

Got mine today, and wow they are impressive, I mean seriously impressive.
The voice chat is plumbed in you just dial up how much you need with the smaller dial.

The sound is fed into them via the optical out on the back of the ps3 and the chat is fed via the usb cable

EDIT* Make sure you follow this order 1)Turn on PS3 - 2)Turn on Astro Base unit - 3)Turn on wireless headset.
I found if I turned them on in a different order then the chat didnt work even tho it was set.
If you follow the above order then go into accessory settings and change the input and output to Astro Chat then you should be able to hear your own voice and see the bar graph change as you speak hth

What about usage with a PC and the stock 2.1 onboard sound card?

And is it good for music playback aswell, or gaming only?

they are OK for music but not that great, you can use them on stereo pc sound cards IF you buy the wired mix amp as the wireless is optical only but the wired has
optical
rca
coax
you can buy usb-optical cables so u plug the usb into the pc and then your optical cable into the usb adapter. they are about £10
as far as i know the A30's are better for music

Optical out from my MacBook pro into the mixamp. Remote app on my iPhone = wireless music all round the house and control of my full music collection

Yeah I love my Astros best 200 I've spent in ages

Yes indeed my Astros are awesome, I use them for gaming and for watching movies when the wife has gone to bed and for wirelessly listening to music round the house, could not recommend them enough

I bought my wireless a40's at Xmas time and have only used them for 2-3hrs. I just never get the time and I'm knackered when 10pm comes lol

Cost me over £250 as I bought the rechargeable battery and also the ps3 cable and a shorter amp to headphone cable.

Just bought some black MGL Astro's with 3 speaker tags, optical cable and rechargeable battery all brand new for £140!

MGS4, not my choice but thats what they came with. They look cool enough though.

If I was going to buy at minimum cost I'd get the Sony ones, a bit extra to splash then the Turtle Beach PX5 or to buy the best get the Astro's
