[Mk2] [NA] Getting the 2 back on the road

Post by Azuremr2 »

Morning all,

My 2 has not been driven for about 6 months and I now need to get it back on the road. The car was perfectly fine before i stopped driving it but I want to give it a once over before using it again fulltime.

Just need some advice please...

- The engine oil has probably all dripped to the bottom of the engine, Will i do any damage when I start it up again?

Thanks all.

hi,
your oil drains to the bottom (sump) every time you turn the engine off.
if the oil has not been changed for a while i would do an oil and filter
change.
other than that just the normal checks, coolant, brakes, tyres, etc.
get it going and enjoy :thumleft: paul.

Hi Paul,

I did plan to do an oil and filter change but thanks for confirming. Sounds like some good basic checks and I'm back on the road!

Thanks again.

Make sure none of your brake calipers have seized!

Surely you mean have a look and see if any of the calipers haven't seized?!

Thanks for the tips peeps.

One last thing...luckily(?) the car is parked pointing downhill. Will I be able to start it by rolling down said hill? :-k

....after checking the brakes of course! :D

You'll still need "some" charge in the battery to get the ECU / coil etc going.

Yes, you can bumpstart NAs. Not advisable on turbos though as it can cover the turbo exhaust wheel in unburnt fuel.

If your worried about starting the engine because the top end is dry after being stood simply pull off the coil lead at the centre iof the distributer and crank the engine for 10-20 secs. This will pump some oil around the engine before you fire it up.
