the characteristic "whining" sound... alternator ?

Post by cvega666 »

hi guys

quick question - I'm sure all NA owners know this high pitched whining sound that usually comes from the mr2 engine - what is that ? alternator or oil/water pump ?
exactly this sound - high pitched whistle : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA0DBtx34jc

I'm a bit concerned as my car this evening didnt make that sound for a sec, then after a loud screech from a belt it started whining again.
Just wondering what's on the way out :)

cheers
J

just been looking over some photos of the 3sge and if i understand it correctly i could tighten up the alternator belt myself quite easily.. just asking this before Luke is going to kill me for showing up at his garage 3rd saturday in a row ;)

how much tension should there be in the alt belt ? I can easily press it down with my finger.

i had a similar sound from a vectra once when a cambelt idler was sticky. perhaps its cambelt related?

EDIT: also had similar sound from our old car when i changed the alt belt and it was too tight, just remembered :thumleft:

hmm.... i dont know. I just took it for a spin and it seems ok. but in the morning struggles for a bit, the whining sound is gone, something (belt) screeches loudly and then something (lol, alternator?) starts, the whining sound is back. I'd think the belt is slipping and alternator has some trouble starting to move, but not sure. I'll start it tomorrow morning while looking over the engine bay, perhaps that will give me a clue... the alt belt seems a bit loose if anything, I can easily press it with one finger.

hmm.. seems weird to me as I had both the cambelt and alternator belt done too... but it did indeed started happening on one of the colder days.

I have this sound on my Rev1 N/A.

Only picked it up today. Few mates who are on here think its the alternator belt being a bit tight.

Will try and have a look over it this week.

cool, let us know what you find.

My belt is pretty loose, if not too loose. I dont know how tight should it be and how to measure it without any tools. I've browsed thru some forums and apparently it should be so you can twist it with your fingers only about 1/4 of a turn. Mine is a bit floppier than that..

could be. On a cold morning I can clearly hear that it has problems moving; for a couple seconds engine is really struggling, but frees up with a screech quite quick. Hopefully not terminal yet, I really wanna stay out of the garage till new years :)

I'll have a look at it on Friday probably, half day at work :)

Hadnt noticed it in idle, not in higher gears that I have noticed.
Turned everything off for a good listen while driving it home.

heres a (rubbish phone) video of mine making that nose :(

http://s810.photobucket.com/albums/zz28 ... 010001.mp4

It seems to rise with revs, stop at a certain point, then come back again at lower revs (or when i put the fogs on!!)
