[Mk2] [Turbo] Cryogenic Freezing

Post by Rev 3 Kris »

In the middle of building a 2.2 engine i have e rev2 bottom end with HKS 2.2 stroker kit in it which is 87mm bore so a little worried about the block cracking so was thinking of having block cryogenically frozen to make it harder and hopefully less likely to crack anyone had any experience with it ??

Can't say as I've ever heard of freezing the block to make it less prone to cracking? Heating and then slowly cooling might have an effect but I'm not sure of the opposites effect on grain structure etc....

Be interested to hear of anyones experience of it myself :)

Looks very interesting....might have to get in touch with them and see how expensive it is, even if it's just for some brake disks

i remember reading about this in banzai mag about 2 years ago from a guy when drag racing his pulsar GTiR. The problem he had was he was braking one of the gears all the time (5th i think).

He sent of the gears of to be cryo treated and the end result was they lasted much much longer

I've never heard of a GEN2 block cracking and certainly not because it was overbored. What kind of boost pressure are you going for and what CR?

I was recently looking into this myself, but i couldnt get hold of frozen solid to get quotes. After several attemps at trying to contact them to get advice as well as a price i give up, have you had any luck in getting quotes of them??

ive read up on this cyro freezing and the science behind it makes sense.
i was looking at getting the head frozen, and sleeving the block.

There is a thread on the US owners club containing plenty of cracked revision 2 blocks.

87mm is too much.

I'm pretty sure inlinemotors do a sleeve with a bore of 87mm which they say is indestructible. Take a look. www.inlinemotors.co.uk

mines sleeved and at 86.5mm thats my limit!

My wonders about cryo freezing tho is that this is going to make the block more brittle and being as its Det that causes most blocks to crack -and det is an explosion producing a Shock wave that causes the damage, then surely making the block more brittle will make it More likely to crack if det occurred?!

for eg, Glass is more brittle than perspex but glass is stronger.. if you set of an explosion near them both, the glass will shatter the perspex will flex.

Just get a 5fse block, you have got the crank already and the block is the right size stock and will never crack as long as its a 98 on one
