[Mk2] [Turbo] Snobbery

Post by daveturbo »

I just wondered what others may think on how our MR2's are considered.
Sometimes I buy mags like Practical Classics and this particular magazine is a great read especially as I drove/owned many of the cars featured in this magazine.
When it comes to looking through the ads they hardly get a mention...as if they are not worthy. In fact I believe the buyers guide says the prices are falling.
I in my teens/twenties owned a MGB Roadster and TR7 ...ok they are classics now but not half the fun and have rust probs that cars of that era suffered from.To invest in FUN,GOOD LOOKS,TOUGH ENGINES....and a mid engined great drive..the MR2 should be high on any list.
I would say to any one with an eye to the future who loves cars...buy it now, store it or whatever with a view to driving a classic in the future ?

It's like with any car that falls into the MR2 price bracket (which isn't exactly high). You will get all type's of people owning them:

The young boyracer because it's cheap, sporty and the school girls love it

The Mature owner who respects what it is, and appreciates it

The More Mature Owner who doesn't want to let go lol

the Hair dresser... :-# :D

And all those inbetween, so to be honest it's hard to categorise the MR2 and with the inexperienced drivers throwing them round lampost's it's no wonder they don't get a worth while mention.

Yea I completely agree with the statment above :thumleft:

Around my way most of the MR2’s are chavified, exhausts bigger than the car an car lowing bordering on the ridiculous :? the 2 is already low why lower it further and kiss every speed bump you meet  , chav boy racers boosting it up high streets in straight lines because they cant turn left or right. it's crazy ](*,)

It’s a shame the MR2 is ruined by white trainer wearing shell suit scum  , surely they must have more important things to do like running there baby factorys, sponging off the social or auditioning for a slot on the Jeremy Kyle show rather than chaving Mr2’s, it gives us respectable 2 drivers a bad name and more important it has ruined the cars image.

Perhaps in 10 to 20 years time when the mr2 is getting very few and far between and "only" being snapped up by collectors, perhaps then it will be considered as a must own classic sports car from olden days.

Funny ole question and valid...

Im actually embarraced to show up at the pub in my noise box because of the stigma the cars have developed over the years... Mines still clean looking too...!! When I first bought it in the late 90's... it was the car I always took to the pub and loved to be seen in it...

Similar with work, I wont bring it to work as it portrays an image which is not in line with project management services.... hmmm.

Track day though... ideal tool to rock up in !!

only the other day i was waiting at the lights (not up front, but like 3 cars back), and can what only be described as idiots, started making all these vvrrroom vvvrrroom, pptttssshhh noises while looking in my direction...clearly loud enough so i could hear....

honestly had no idea what to say, never encounted that before.....

have encounted, "oh what car is that", but not a blatent pee take....
:? :? :?

i actually looked at myself and asked what i was doing in a moderatly supped up jap car at 28 years old.. :?

then i got over it as i hit the B roads...

I wouldn’t worry about it mate, though I personally haven’t had the pee taken yet, but I do how ever get idiots in saxos and corsa’s wanting a race at the lights which is a bit pathetic to be honest, I’m 31 years old now not 17 and racing…. what I can only describe as “children” at the lights is sad and not to mention twatish behaviour, they pretty much always rev the tit$ out of there eleven hundred cc engines, my initial reaction is to say nothing, my face says it all and a quick shaking of my head as to say “c0ck$” is usually enough for them to get the message.

my 2 only has a boarder kit spats and skirts and 17 rims the rest is standard, I do how ever have a bloody great SEGA logo in the rear window which lol surprisingly gets a lot of good feedback, mostly kids say “look mum a Sega car” or dads will say “Sega…jeez reminds me of Outrun” as it’s a red 2 hehe.

Well I do agree with all that is said. I suppose it's that it's hard to understand why a good handling MID Engined car is not taken to the heart more by those who enjoy a great drive .
I bet if Jeremy Clarkson were to feature one of these 'bargains' and even decide to own one the 'street cred' would rocket !
In agreeing with all the comments I have to admit that the number plate on my car reads D10 WOW....this was brought years ago as a little laugh and possible investment. Now when I am on the road and some boy racer is behind me I can almost feel them saying 'nothing special with that, burn him off..etc etc. Perhaps I will switch numbers with my other drive a Mitsubishi Delica !
Thanks all

I sold my old MK2 to my Dad (50+) and he loves it, drives it everywhere.

for the amount of car you get for your money.... they're up there with the best... in my opinion.

thats 2 of us mate :thumleft:
can honestly say, after owning 6 of them.
as an allround car,the best i have driven or owned.
the vast majority of owners are,the salt of the earth,
as proven by the members on here.
the chavs, for one reason or another, don't seem to stay with the mr2
for to long
so while the mr2 might never reach vintage status.
a few of its drivers are not to far away
and long may that continue.

Wow Ancient member.....

6 MR2's that's a very good recommendation for the vehicle !

I don't think I will ever comprehend how it's now so underrated ...even just sitting in the thing gives me a buzz. ( mind you that's all I can do until I get it fixed  .)

Anyway good luck
