The following is the result of a couple of young guys in stock hatches treating a Silverstone test day as a race day. They both ran wide at Copse but continued to race each other off the circuit. As I understand it, one ended up in the tyre wall and the other through the gravel and back onto the circuit and into an MR2. Simon Topp can now lay claim to the most spectacular MR2 crash (previously held by Tim Cartledge with six revolution roll at Mallory) after flipping end-over-end three times and barrel rolling five times.
Photographs were taken by the driver who was largely unharmed - the only visible injury having because by his oversized wristwatch! The roof deformed around the roll cage and all of the safety equipment performed exceptionally well.
Simon went on to race on both the Saturday and Sunday in a spare Rogue Motorsport car.

Will any action get taken against the stock hatch drivers?

I'm hoping they both got a smack at the very least
Glad to hear that no-one was hurt though.

Ordinarily there wouldn't be much that anyone could do, since this was a test day and not a race. However, since the venue was booked exclusively by the 750 Motor Club they have jurisdiction over their members I believe there will be a formal inquiry. I'll let you know how that goes.

That'll be the driver of the MR2... We'll help as much as we can though.
Re: MR2 Championship Car - Test Day Crash
A few more pics taken of the car after it was recovered:
As you can see although the car is well and truly knackered the passenger compartment is still in tact so is proof that all the safety measures work properly and why I walked away just a bit dazed and bruised and no more.
Many thanks to all the guys for thier support and especially Patrick for letting me get behind the wheel of a hire car to race in after I'd done that!

No better justification for a roll cage than this event, glad everyone got out of it without injury and massive thumbs up to Rogue for building a good, safe car.
Re: MR2 Championship Car - Test Day Crash

Damn! Glad you're ok mate, that looks nasty. I'm sure the passenger door would have caved right in if the sidebars weren't there
Re: MR2 Championship Car - Test Day Crash
wow, must have been one hell of a ride!
no doubt the roll cage saved the roof coming in and saved the driver. good proof that the cage works very well.

Re: MR2 Championship Car - Test Day Crash
Thats really made me consider a cage in mine now, even for road use!
That is proof that the roll cage does it job. If that wasnt there i dont think the driver would be here either

Not much good having a cage for road use unless you opt to wear a helmet everytime you drive the car. The risk of smashing your head on the rollcage negates the benefits really.
Motorsport is dangerous which is why race cars have to have rollcages. Not quite the same on the road really.
