cool information..

http://genesisforums.org/classifieds/16 ... c-kit.html

from the above link

Unlike, the majority of "performance" turbochargers available in the aftermarket, the IHI RX6B family of turbochargers were specifically designed for performance automotive applications. In fact, one of the most powerful engines to ever compete in Formula One, the Honda RA168e, used a pair of these turbochargers to generate upwards of 1300 horsepower at 60psi of boost pressure on a 1.5-liter engine.

All of the IHI RX6B turbochargers rely on the same RX6B turbine wheel. This 84.5-trim exhaust wheel has a major diameter of 62mm and a minor diameter of 57mm. The turbine wheel is housed in an ultra-lightweight turbine housing. The turbine housing has a unique RX6B footprint that's roughly the size of a T25. What the turbine section lacks in size, it makes up for in efficiency as this driver has seen flow rates that allow for over 600 horsepower.

In motorsports, weight is the enemy and apparently IHI spent a good deal of time to make the RX6B series as light as possible. A complete TCW77-P18 turbocharger tickles the scales at just 12 pounds. If you compare that to any other turbo on the market, you'll probably find it to be about a half to two-thirds the weight of a comparable-flow turbocharger. In addition to being lightweight, IHI also designed the RX6B series to be extremely reliable. On two occasions, we have had the intercooler pipe come off of one of the two turbos on our GT-R while on the dyno. While this would cause most turbochargers to overspeed and snap a shaft, the RX6B turbo wasn't even damaged.

a similar turbo was used for the FERRARI F40

info about the specific turbo i have
TCW76

The TCW76 compressor uses a compressor wheel with a larger major diameter than the TCW15 or TCW10. Instead of a 78mm outside diameter, the major diameter is 82mm. The TCW76 sports a 56mm inducer. This translates into a 47-trim relationship. This compressor is best suited for mid-to-high boost applications. The best efficiencies are in the 1.7 to 2.2bar (25-32psi) boost pressure range. As for horsepower potential, the TCW76 is best for applications in the 470 to 520 flywheel horsepower range.

INFO on the small exhaust housings, and ball bearing setup

Almost everyone says that our small exhaust housings are going to build back pressure. And when upgrading to a larger size ex house the spool will suffer = some say that this turbo doesnt spool any faster than a regular garrett bb. But.. I sent the broken RHX6 i had left over to a turbo shop who specialises in IHI and Schwitzer. He told me that the turbine was not much smaller than any other performance turbo even though it looks like it. Thats because this turbine housing is beautifully cast from a higher quality material and therefor the walls in the housin can be made alot thinner than regular turbos. Thats why you think that it is a small and restrictive turbine, while it in fact is just a thin casting which makes it look small :) this also helps explain why this turbo is so light.

And then to the CHRA (center part)..
First off, he never uses BB turbos for some reason, but he was very impressed how IHI/Honda had solved the ball bearing part. From what i understand most bb turbos has a cartridge with the bearings in. This turbo has 2 "regular" machine bearings and to prevent any shaft play a soft spring is attached between the bearings to put slight pressure on them axialwise = no movement.. Nice!! :)
So if your turbo ever goes bad bearingwise, you should be able to go to a hardware store or what you call it and just order similar sized bearings.. SKF or such. He said that if he would ever go bb this was the way a center should be made, very innovative and very easy to maintain and take apart.

the KKK were an upgrade, and i think came in the LM version

original F40 quotes ive found;

'Power came from an enlarged, 2.9 L (2936 cc) version of the GTO's twin IHI turbocharged V8'

'which inturn was a bored, short-stroke derivative of the GTO's twincam Quattrovalvole unit. Twin air-air Behr intercoolers feed dual IHI turbochargers;'

'My F40 is stock with two exceptions, the original IHI turbos were replaced with KKK turbos and a freer flowing sports exhaust has been fitted. Result of the two is bhp is up from 478 to 600. The factory figures are very conservative, the LM versions of the F40 develop close to 800 bhp. You can get plenty more power out of the car without to much effort.'

'F40 IHI Twin Turbo Engine: Configuration: Twin Turbo V8 heads and twin turbo to beat lag.Two Japanese water-cooled IHI RHB 53 LW Turbochargers (again, one system per bank) provide the turbocharging. '

Nice collection of info, I had a one-off twin IHI RX6B kit for the Supra but sold it before I had chance to fit it, would have been fun to see what it could have managed.
