Cleaning an Empty Fuel Tank

Post by jrleech »

Hi,

I've got the tank off my Mk1, and prior to fitting a new pump it makes sense to clean out the tank.

I've found loads of guides on the web about how to clean it, but I can't find much out there in the way of tank cleaner that all the guides use.

My local motor factors have never heard of such a thing.

Frost do a tank repair kit, but my tank doesn't need repairing.

The only thing I've seen is something from Rimmerbros that has no description, and Starbrite Startron Fuel Tank Cleaner from a Marine store.

Surely this can't be that specialist?

What do you guys use??

Thanks,
Jon

Hi, I would just get some petrol and swill it about the tank then pour it out, keep on doing it untill you have got a good amount of crap out, You never get it all but even if you 50% would be a massive improvment.

Thanks. I'll do that with what's in the tank at the moment (I can keep straining the fuel and then putting it back in). Also will try with some small pebbles in there, should help free up any loose bits (unless it's sludgy when they might get stuck!).

Going to give this stuff a try, Marine Clean from Frost: Clicky

when i have cleaned out fuel tanks (usually on motorbikes) this is the method i have used, just keep on sloshing untill fuel comes out clean
the only way I can think of, unless you take it and get it steam cleaned at your local garage then dry it out with a hair dryer
