[Mk2] [Turbo] What clutch is this ?

Post by Martin F »

I was told that it was a RPS single plate carbon clutch, 525lb/ft. I would just like conformation before i advertise it for sale as i can't find any pics on the net.

Might be the extra clamping force of the cover plate. Almost sure the friction plate is stock tho. Might be wrong, been a while since I've seen one

One thing is for certain, that is NOT a standard friction plate.

The standard friction plate has springs and that has rubber bushes. I had a very similar RPS clutch to that on my old ST205 GT4. Not sure it was 525lbs/ft rating, but it was one "higher" than the fast road version (whatever rating that was).

In sumary, it's not a standard friction plate.

Still believe that's a standard clutch plate. I have taken a good few out with rubber parts instead of springs, even on stock n/a's.

As said, might be wrong, but looks like nothing special.

Hi Martin..

Who told you it was a single plate carbon clutch... ?? the previous owner... ? you can PM.

We only ever fitted the clutch.. the customer supplied the clutch along with many other parts from that build...

Looks like a RPS 450ft/LBS Single Plate Cltuch, same as the one I've got fitted to my car, was told that RPS use standard clutch plates, just uprated covers?

Not uncommon in clutches. My last car had a +50% clamping force plate with a standard centre. Gives a good comprimise between torque capacity and drivability.

thanks Steven,

Yeah, the previous owner and it was stated in mr2only magazine #-o , i have had conformation that it's a standard friction plate with a rps 450 or 475 lb/ft cover plate, they go for £300 new, just have to figure out what's a good resale price now... :-k

cheers for all the input lads :thumleft:

Glad you got sorted.. as i said we only ever fitted it , we didnt supply it so i could not remember exactly what one it was, just checked the spec in the MR2 only mag... not sure what happened there, the other MR2 in that feature is my own car and i can honestly say i never noticed the "carbon clutch" bit in the spec sheet of your one before now... strange !!
