[Mk2] [Turbo] Edit:*Dyno Update*Car back from its iridium sparkplug mishap =D

Post by Kongaroo »

As some of you already know my car was recently in for a rebuild due to an iridium spark plug tip separating and damaging a piston, cylinder wall and taking a chunk out of a valve. Fortunately thanks to Peter and Anthony at SBITS the car's now back in action and I no longer have to drive a Vauxhall combo hire van to work (hire place was out of cars that weekend  ).

All I can say is WOW. After 3 weeks of driving a hire van it really drove home to me just how fast our cars really are. Made me fall in love with the tubby all over again \:D/

Can't say that I will be using iridium plugs in my tubby again though. The offending plug was less than 15K miles old and had never been re-gapped. It's not the first time an iridium plug tip has separated on my car either, although unfortunately it was the first time I didn't get away without damaging something. When we looked at the pistons later Peter pointed out the plug tip shaped dent in the piston but otherwise there weren't any signs of detonation on the pistons.

Thankfully I managed to hide the repair bill away from my wife

So anyway I thought I'd share a few pictures of what I had done while my tubby was over at SBITS. You'll have to excuse me for not washing the car prior to the photos, lol.

Customised titanium exhaust:

This exhaust originally came with quite bit of piping - some of it was titanium and some of it was stainless. We ended up losing most of this original pipework in order to make the exhaust fit over the subframe so only the initial bit of pipework after the back box is titanium and the rest is stainless. Weight wise the back box is approx. 2kg and the new stainless B-pipe should be around 3+kg which puts the total exhaust weight probably somewhere between 5 to 6kg which is a good 7kg or so lighter than my old Mongoose and about 14kg lighter than the original stock exhaust.

It's a little on the noisy side for me at the moment so I have ordered a bung for it and also bought lockys96's Burns stainless silencer for attaching later :D

I also had my Ask Sport carbon bootlid painted to see if I would like the wingless look.

I have to say that initially before my suspension settled down again following the car being jacked up I thought that it looked really crap. Later as the suspension settled I thought it sort of looked ok. I think for it to work you would have to really lower the car alot.

Anyway ultimately wingless wasn't really to my taste and after a couple of weeks I got Peter to drill holes in it to fit my Rev 3 spoiler back on

I took a few photos of it just before the car was reunited with its spoiler so people can get an idea of what the car looked like wingless.

Good stuff fella, heard all about your spark plug incident and saw the pics of the damaged valve!

Glad your back on the road. Good call on hiding that bill too

I'm the same, I drive my peugeot 1.9 TD most of the time and the MR2 on sunny days. But after driving the pug, then getting in the MR2, it's like hooooooooleeeeeeeeeeeeee sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Exhaust sounded awesome mate when i was in the car today. Whole car sounded awesome though :-)

I would like to do something similar with my hks. Cut out a lot of the piping and the big silencer box and have a shorter run pipe. Also the b-pipe on mine is 2.5" which i want to enlarge to 3".

Car looked sweet but i didn't expect anything less from a true enthusiast. Hopefully i can get my car up to the standard of yours.

Lastly the engine bay after the new sleeves, 87mm pistons, rods, valve springs, water+oil pump, Bearings, Hoses from hell had all been replaced. You can also see the polished cam cover that I got from GTS GAV \:D/

Anyway now that the running in period is finished I can confirm the car runs great and consumes much less oil now than before. Just need to find some spare time between work and looking after baby to book the car in at a dyno so I can check and finalise my GT28RS map, lol.

Cheers for the comments guys. Have to admit I was a little torn as to whether to plough another big chunk of money into the car. In the end it took me all 2 minutes to decide because well... tubbies rock, haha. Hopefully my wife won't catch me typing this and demand to know how much I paid

Craig - was good to meet up with you today - just a shame it was a little too wet for you to see how the GT28RS kicks in. Anyway looking forward to see how you get on with those low offset Buddy clubs!

Jay - how dare you mock my rear foglight - object of great beauty that it is :eye:

Cheers Andy. I thought the sleeves would make running the 87mm pistons safer although Greeny seems to have not needed them even on his monster build.

Regarding the iridiums - I kept reading posts on the internet about how unlikely it was for the plug tips to break off unless you re-gapped them so figured I had just had a bit of bad luck the first couple of times. However 3 times is a bit beyond coincidence if you ask me and it's not like there were even signs of detonation on the pistons so I don't think they had a particularly hard 15K miles, lol.

Greeny's block split other week. Use copper plugs. Much safer.

Split on the outside though, not on the cylinder walls.
