Dash flocking

Post by Revo »

Just wondering if anyone had some suggestions for me.

The MR2 gets some SERIOUS reflected glare from the top of the dash - right in the middle of the drivers view - not ideal although if I get a booster seat I could pop my head above the windscreen.

Just wondering if theres any good material or maybe a kit that I can bang on to help with this?

Never done before so don't know what options are out there!

A chap on the Supra forum used this kit:

Looked really good to be honest.

I didn't realise you could 'do it yourself' flocking...I thought it was a 'send it off and get it done' job. Very tempted by this- anyone on here done it themselves?

im pretty sure flocking is done electrostaticly, they give the dash a negative charge and cover it in adhesive then blast it with positively charged fibres. pretty much the same way powdercoating is done just without the baking at the end. this is prob something that could be done at home but i would imagine it would make a lot of mess and would never be to the quality standard of a professional job.

I know somebody who tried this and made a right mess of it.
TBH, his attempt was doomed from the start but it illustrates the potential problem quite well...

He had an old Alfa with a flocked dashboard that'd begun to wear and he figured he could use one of those kits to restore it.

Trouble is that, basically, you get one shot at it and then you're stuffed.
You apply the glue then sprinkle the "fluff" all over the dashboard and then shake off the surplus when it's dry.
The problem is that if there's any dodgy patches, where the stuff hasn't stuck, there's no way to to apply more glue and tidy up any dodgy bits.

That's what happened to the car I saw and the end result was a right mess.

Anyway, if you get it perfect (I assume by evenly applying lots of glue and making sure you get all the electrostatic gubbins perfect) then the results can be good but it's possible to ruin your dash if you get a patchy finish.
Bit of a gamble IMO.

Why on earth would you flock the console and leave the dash top shiny? :?
