[Mk2] [NA] Black Top Beams Engine - Anybody fitted one?

Post by Rowland »

Does anyone know if a black top Beams engine has been successfully transplanted into an mk2 in the UK?

:-k

I'm thinking along the lines of buying a tidy mk2 shell, engine out, strip it out to the bare bones, and fitting a black top Beams, obviously making the necessary modifications for it to run in a MR2.
Throttle bodies plus ECU may be the next stage.

In my head it would make a fantastic race car for next year, and possibly a first in the UK??

It doesnt fit, the dual VVTi cam cover hits the O/S strut tower.

I have heard of one SW20 running one but nothing to substantiate it!

There's 2 other main differences (apart from the conversion from an in-line to a transverse set-up). The black top is returnless fuel line and fly by wire throttle so unless you make something custom you'd possibly need to transplant the pedal box from the RS200 as well.

It's not worth it IMO -the red top is a straight swap in and if you look at the bolt on mods I've got I'm about 220Bhp before fitting itb's.

There's a guy in Australia just re-built his red top and pulling something like 280Bhp out of his on itb's =P~ . Fitted to a Celica though #-o

That's a red top beams though, which isn't dual vvti :-k

Correct, but note that the inlet cam pulley is adjacent to the strut tower, and the exhaust cam pulley is further back and has lots of free space around it...

Lol! The engine in your photo is still three doors down from us at Thor - I'll go measure it tomorrow. It may not be a straight drop-in - but we're planning a red-top / black-top hybrid which should fit just fine.

You could even just convert the red-top head to dual vvt-i with a couple of machine ops, a cam angle sensor, vvt actuator and black-top exhaust cam and pulley.

the standard engine bracket wont bolt up and will push the driveline to the left too much to be worthwhile.

we measured this a few years back with my mates black top before he fitted it to a 70's celica.

it's a shame as the black top is more plentiful and can found cheaper in my experience.

he uses a t50.

Anyone got a pic of the front of the head of the BLACKTOP/ maybe it can be machined so as to use the running gear of the RED TOP. There has to be enough aluminiium. Adding VVTi to the exhaust will NOT foul in the MR2 engine bay , its well clear.

So does the 'black top' hit the strut tower or not, as I'm also thinking about dropping a black top in. Also, if there is an issue with the alignment of the drive line, would this require modifying or machining new engine mounts to re-position the engine :-k ?

I still can't see how the black top will fit going by the distance between the oil filler cap on both engines and the FS strut. I'd really like to see one fitted though -there is apparently one SW20 with one fitted acccording to youtube -but whenever I've seen it posted I've never had any response on actual proof.

..Meh, ret top's still tuneable very very easily with bolt-ons (218Bhp ...cough, cough)

This is my aw11 blacktop beams conversation, it does fit but bloody tight. I've only got a few wire to do then it will be up and running

Not sure if it helps, but someone in Holland doing a Beams greytop swap currently. But there are more of them driving around.

Do you have a project thread for this? I'm about to undertake the same project.

I'm sure I saw one on the MR2OC facebook page a while ago. Most likely an American. Was a while ago though.
