Pacific Works Makeover

Post by Moo »

Earlier in the year I took my car to Luke at Pacific Works to have some stuff looked at. It was the first time I'd met Luke and I spent the day at his place while he was working on my car. At some point while we were chatting Luke mentioned that my Veilside rear bumper was a great shape for having a diffuser fitted and it was something he'd always fancied having a go at. It got me thinking and we talked about it again on a subsequent visit. Another thing that came up was fitting some ducting to get cool air to the front brakes and dressing up the engine bay. The more I thought about it the better it sounded so I decided to go for it.

My car has been at Lukes for the last few weeks having these mods done as well as a ton of other work I threw at him. I wasn't sure how I wanted my engine bay dressed or what design the diffuser should be so basically let Luke get creative and come up with something that looked good.

I picked up my car this afternoon and to say I wasn't disappointed with the end result would be a major understatement!

The transformation in the engine bay is amazing, I was blown away when Luke lifted the engine lid :D

Aside from painting the core, the chargecooler system had a complete makeover. The cinq rad was replaced for a GT4 rad that was fitted without having to remove the air con rad. Result!

Image

The chargecooler core had to be replaced as when the lagging was removed for painting we found a nasty surprise  Somebody had previously hacked it up and done a really bad welding job as there was a 3" crack along the weld which was leaking boost straight out the bottom :-k

All the CC pipework was replaced with high quality reinforced pipe and the gutless pump that was on there was swapped for a high flow rate marine pump. The pump is located near the filler neck, you can see it in the last engine bay shot. The charcoal canister was relocated to make room for the pump and is now behind the Arc box. The CC overflow is situated right in the corner of the engine bay.

I'm really impressed by the quality of work and attention to detail, from things like the core being raised slightly so it doesn't heatsoak so quickly right down to the use of numerous clips to keep the pipework tidy

This was practically a new chargecooler installation and I'm happy to say that I got the Kingsmill installation this time without even having to ask for it

For the brake ducting Luke used existing holes in the sides of the Veilside front bumper. The holes are behind the flared bits so you can't see them but in a perfect place where the air is channelled through the bumper. The ducting is fibre glassed to the inside of the bumper and shaped to fit into 3" fittings in the wheel archliners. It worked out really well and should be pretty effective at keeping the front brakes cool as they're getting loads of air now :D

You can see the ducting through the bumper below the sidelights 8)

The diffuser is probably the best bit for me. Luke and his fabricator mate have done a great job with the designing and fitment and I think it looks wicked :D

All in all I'm really happy with how it's gone and can't sing Luke's praises highly enough :thumleft:

He's a top guy with great creative vision and an eye for detail. If you want a proper job done to the highest standards with no corner cutting yet still at a competative price then he's your man every time. A proper MR2 specialist :thumleft:

Cheers Luke, great job :thumleft: :D

Hi Moo,

Saw your car at Luke's when I dropped in last weekend.
The charge cooler finish is great and really suits the engine bay.

Another top Pacific Works - Luke & Harry special. :thumleft:

I can't say I'm surprised at the Results, Luke has always been meticulous about his work and a true MR2 fan and that shows in the quality of the work he turns out. Excellent job Luke

Looks awesome!

How much does the engine bay dress up cost, and what's included in it?

Thanks for the positive comments all :thumleft:

I'm dead chuffed with how it turned out, way better than I'd imagined :D

I've noticed the charge cooler upgrades have helped massively, even taking into account the colder weather. The car feels much more responsive with a core that doesn't leak boost right out the bottom and I haven't seen manifold inlet temps above 30 C yet, even after a run. These are much lower than when it went off the road 2 months ago so it appears the new core, GT4 rad and marine pump have done the job, even accounting for the lower ambient temps now.

I love the diffuser. It looks fantastic and every one seems to agree on that. I've seem some really crappy looking custom diffusers on the back of different cars and wasn't sure how Luke was going to pull this off but he's got it absolutely spot on. The diffuser body is curved to match the lines of the bumper and the fins are at the same angle as the bumper. It's hard to get from the pictures but when you see it in the flesh you can see what a brilliant job it is and how much effort went it to it.
