Mk1a subwoofer????

Post by Boddney »

Hi gang,
I am building a sound system for my Mk1b but as usual on a tight buget.
My preference is to fit an alpine active sub preferably an swd-1600 or swe-1000 but they are still sooooo expensive.
My next thought was to fit a Mk1a sub but I am unsure wheather they are any good and worth all the hassle. Can anyone shed some light on whether this is the way to go or not.
The rest of the system will be alpine sxe-1025s (4") & sxe-0825s (3.5") speakers with Kenwood 4x50 HU.
Help me out here dudes.
Cheers, Bod. ](*,)

I've had a few MR2s with the stock sub in and all I can say about them is that they've either never been wired in (possible as I can't remember ever using a car with the stock headunit) or they make no noticeable difference. Got at least 2 or 3 in the garage if you want to try one though.

Save your money and get a SWD1600 (swe-1000 won't fit under the seat). You can't get them new any more, so you'll find one secondhand for reasonable money.
I've fitted my SWD-1600 with Alpine 4"'s at the front and I'm well impressed, it sounds the badgers nadgers. It doesn't give you seafront bass, but it makes it sound like a much bigger system than it really is!

I have JL Audio 3.5" speakers in the rear, which are totally sound quality but pricey for £50. Infinity reference speakers 4" in the front which are damn good too.

I had a custom sub box built by my brother years ago for my mk1a I moved into my mk1b which houses an old JL Audio W3 10" Sub which sits behind the passenger seat and my amp is mounted where the rear storage compartment is at.

Ill take some photos later or tomorrow.

Don't bother with the 1a "sub" - it's rubbish :-:

As above - one of the active's will be much, much better :thumleft:

Thanks peeps,
As I thought, money money money. :(
Still xmas & B/day are coming so maybe some music vouchers will arrive. The SWD-1600 is my prefered choice.
Thanks for the offer of the test Phil, I may still try one for intrest sake so I'll get intouch when time (& wifey) permits.
Cheers, Bod
